Boys' Volleyball Team Wins Quarterfinal Match Before Falling In Semis

Newtown High School's boys' volleyball team, the No 4 seed, defeated No 5 Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport at home in the South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinals on May 21. NHS prevailed 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-22). The Nighthawks visited top seed Joel Barlow of Redding in the semifinals on May 26 and lost 3-0 (25-8, 25-22, 25-10).

In the win over Kolbe, Noel McLeod had 25 kills and Trenton Story logged 14 kills to power the offense. Story and Kade Deraney had two aces apiece. Sebastian Los and Story tallied six and five blocks, respectively. McLeod racked up 18 digs, Deraney had 17 digs, Sam Irving 12, Ian Akbas 11, Talmaje Bacon nine, and Story eight as the Hawks compiled 79 digs as a team. Deraney had 39 assists.

Against Barlow, McLeod had nine kills, and Deraney led the Nighthawks with eight digs and 17 assists. Newtown will begin state tourney play in early June.
