Girls' Lacrosse Team Defeated By Guilford In Quarterfinals
Newtown High School's girls' lacrosse team, the No 6 seed, was beaten 19-11 by No 3 and host Guilford in the Class L State Tournament quarterfinals on June 5.
The Nighthawks got three goals each from Peyton Merrifield and Sara Ruddy, two goals and four assists off the stick of Natalie McLean, a pair of net-finders from Gabby O'Sullivan, and a goal and an assist from Blake Heim-Sherwood. Olivia Verdi tallied an assist to go along with a ground ball scoop.
Heim-Sherwood logged four draw controls, McLean had three draw controls and a pair of ground balls, Ruddy had two draw controls, Delia Stango recorded two ground balls, Merrifield had a ground ball, and Elise Ansman had a draw control. In net, Emily Sachs made six saves.
Newtown went 10-6 in the regular season. The Nighthawks beat No 11 seed Bristol Eastern 18-3 in the opening round of states after reaching the South-West Conference Tournament semifinals.
