Hawks Advance To Championship Round Of State Tourney
Newtown's 10U baseball team defeated Weston 12-2 in the Cal Ripken State Tournament at the Glander Field Complex on July 9. With the win, the Hawks advance to the Sunday, July 12, championship round.
The Hawks will face one of these three teams: Milford, Oxford (which they defeated 4-0 in game two of the tourney) or Weston. Sunday's first pitch is at 1 pm.
Newtown is in the driver's seat and needs to win just one game to earn the title in this double-elimination tourney. If the Hawks lose in the 1 pm game Sunday they will still have a chance to win it all with a rematch at 3:30 pm the same afternoon.
in the win over Weston, Ethan Deming drove in four runs on two hits to lead the Hawks. Deming had two-run doubles in the first and fourth innings to lead the way. Bryce Memoli went 3-for-3 at the plate including a double.
The Hawks plated seven runs in the fourth inning. Nicholas Strong singled to score one run, Ethan doubled, scoring two runs, an error scored one run, Santiago Puebla singled to drive in a run, and Connor Plunkett singled home two runs.
Pitcher Sawyer Matta, allowing two hits and two runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out four, and walking three.
The Hawks accumulated 14 hits in the game. Benji Scholz and Strong each collected multiple hits.
