Board of Education (BOE) members unanimously voted to hire Leslie Ford as the new principal of Reed Intermediate Schools during their meeting on Tuesday, September 1.

Ford fills the vacancy left by former Reed Intermediate Principal Dr Matthew Correia, who assumed the role in early August of 2019. Correia served in the position for seven years before he was chosen as the next principal of John Paterson Elementary School in Newington this past July.

Superintendent of Schools Anne Uberti said the district had an exceptionally strong response to its search for a new principal, with more than 52 candidates applying for the position. Ten candidates were selected from the initial screening, and ultimately, six moved forward for full interviews with a representative committee that included one of the BOE members.

From there, through what Uberti called a rigorous process, the committee narrowed down the field to two "very exceptional candidates.”

Uberti said Ford distinguished herself throughout that process, as she brings in over two decades of education experience and currently serves as an assistant principal at the intermediate level, making her someone who "understands both the academic and developmental needs of students at this unique age."

Uberti continued by saying Ford demonstrated a strong understanding of instructional leadership, a thoughtful and collaborative approach to problem-solving, and an ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and families.

Ford also showcased a warm and approachable demeanor while being clear in her expectations and focused on continuous improvement, according to Uberti.

Uberti added, "Given the strength of the candidate pool and the rigorous process, I feel particularly confident in recommending [Ford]. I believe she is an excellent fit for Reed and for Newtown Public Schools, and I'm very excited to welcome her to our district."

Everyone in attendance applauded once Ford was voted in as Reed's new principal. Ford said she was truly honored and humbled to accept this position, expressing her gratitude to the BOE and everyone involved in the search process for the confidence they placed in her.

Throughout the interview process, Ford said she felt inspired by the district's commitment to students, the dedication of its staff, and the strong sense of community that exists in Newtown.

For the past 26 years, Ford said she has had the privilege of serving students and families as both a teacher and administrator. In turn, she has come to understand the important role schools play in the lives of children, and is committed to building strong relationships with students, staff, and families while supporting high-quality teaching and learning.

Ford also thanked her family for their unwavering support, noting their encouragement has made this opportunity possible.

"I'm excited to get started, eager to listen and learn, and look forward to working together to continue the great work that is already happening at Reed," Ford said. "Thank you again for this opportunity. I am beyond honored and excited."

Everyone in the room applauded again, and the BOE broke for a short recess so everyone could celebrate. A few of Ford's colleagues from Weston Intermediate School, where she served as assistant principal until recently, were in attendance and excitedly gave Ford flowers and hugs.

Those in attendance were free to help themselves to cookies, brownies, chocolate, and water bottles set out for the special occasion.

Dr Kathy Gombos, the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School, will continue to serve as interim principal of Reed Intermediate School until Ford officially starts her new role on September 9.
