I’m writing again about my friend, neighbor, and longtime Newtown representative, Mitch Bolinsky.

For the past fourteen years, Mitch has been a visible and accessible advocate for Newtown.

One issue that has become increasingly important to our community is housing. As someone involved in real estate and local land-use issues, I appreciate that Mitch understands the impact state housing policy can have on individual towns.

Last year, Mitch co-hosted a public forum in Newtown addressing 8-30g, affordable housing requirements, local zoning authority, and proposed changes coming out of Hartford. He has consistently recognized the need for housing while also emphasizing Newtown’s ability to manage its own growth, infrastructure, and community character.

Mitch has also stood firm against housing policies coming out of Hartford that would take too much control away from our towns, including HB 8002, a major housing bill developed with Governor Lamont’s office and strongly supported by the Governor. Mitch opposed the bill and has consistently fought against one-size-fits-all mandates that shift local zoning decisions to Hartford.

That balance matters. Housing policy should create opportunity without unnecessarily taking decisions away from the communities that understand their needs best.

His work extends well beyond housing. Over fourteen years representing Newtown, Mitch has been deeply involved with seniors, education, special education, state budgeting, and constituent services. Just as importantly, he remains present here at home.

What I have always appreciated about Mitch is simple: he listens, he shows up, and he genuinely cares about the people he represents. His commitment to Newtown and his years of experience speak for themselves.
