Tools Taken

On the morning of January 23, police learned that during the previous night, someone broke into a box truck that was parked at a home construction site at 31 Russett Road in Sandy Hook, and stole various tools valued at more than $10,000. New homes are under construction there at the Cider Mill Farm subdivision. Police are investigating the case of first degree larceny, and ask the public for help in solving the crime.

South Main Crash

Motorist John Kitterman, 53, of 22 Sherman Street, who was driving a 1994 Volvo 850 sedan, was stopped for traffic on southbound South Main Street, just north of its intersection with Country Club Road, at about 5:50 pm January 30, when the Volvo was struck from behind by motorist Nancy Adams, 41, of Southbury, who was driving a 1993 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan, police report.

Kitterman reported neck pain after the impact, police said. Police said they verbally warned Adams for following too closely and for failing to carry automotive insurance.

Honda Hits Bridge

  Motorist Robert Zykowski, 46, of Monroe, who was driving a 2000 Honda Civic coupe, was traveling westward on Meadow Brook Road, just west of its intersection with Lazybrook Road, at about 2:50 pm January 28, when Zykowski failed to negotiate a narrow curved section of road and struck a concrete bridge wall on the right side of the road, police said.

Zykowski was not injured. Police said they warned Zykowski for making a restricted turn and for traveling too fast for conditions.

Mitsubishi Hits Pole

Motorist Ear Tep, 43, of Danbury, who was driving a 1993 Mitsubishi Galant northward near 117 Boggs Hill Road at about 5:30 pm January 28, failed to negotiate a curve on the snowy road and struck a utility pole, police said. Tep was not injured, according to police. Police issued Tep a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Chrysler Encounters Deer

Motorist Virginia McKee, 55, of 22 Lake Road was driving a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser on Hanover Road at about 8:45 am January 28, when she encountered seven deer in the road, police said. The Chrysler collided with one of the animals, damaging a headlamp, police said. McKee was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

School Bus Accident

Motorist Leigh Griswold, 38, of 172 Brushy Hill Road, who was driving a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder sport-utility vehicle, was traveling eastward on Cold Spring Road at about 9:12 am January 29, when Griswold stopped due to heavy traffic near the entrance to Middle Gate School, police said.

The Nissan was then struck from behind by a 1994 International 3000 school bus driven by Thomas Adams, Jr, 27, of 33 Hilldale Drive, police said. The bus carried 22 passengers, but there were no injuries, police said.

Police issued Adams an infraction ticket for traveling at an unsafe distance.

Motor Vehicle Case

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Bryan Tilford, 37, of Danbury turned himself over to Newtown Police on February 2 and was charged with second degree failure to appear in court, driving under suspension, violating a stop sign, driving without automotive insurance, and towing an unregistered trailer, police said.

Police said that Tilford had failed to appear in court on December 2 in connection with the motor vehicle charges, which stem from an October 17 incident on Walnut Tree Hill Road.

 After posting a $500 bond, police released Tilford for a February 10 court appearance.

Sand Hill Plaza

Police report they charged William Rohland, 18, of Derby on an arrest warrant on February 2, listing a charge of interfering with police in connection with a past auto accident in the Sand Hill Plaza parking lot on South Main Street.

Police said Rohland was involved in accident last November 30 at the plaza. During the course of the police investigation into the accident, Rohland did not provide proper information to the other motorist, provided false information to police, and mislead police, according to police.

Consequently, police sought an arrest warrant for Rohland, who is slated to appear in court on February 18 to answer the charge.

Hawleyville Collision

Motorist Todd Richert, 36, of Moodus, who was driving a 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck northward on Hawleyville Road at about 10 am February 2, stopped to make a left turn onto Hawleyville Road, police report.

A northbound 2004 Chevrolet Impala driven by Richard Rogers, 38, of Fort Collins, Colo., then struck the Ford from behind, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Rogers an infraction ticket for following too closely.

Chain Reaction

A four-vehicle, chain reaction accident involving two trucks and two sedans occurred on Church Hill Road near St Rose Church at about 10 am February 2, according to police. There were no injuries.

A westbound 1995 International sanding truck, owned by the state Department of Transportation and driven by Francis Phelan, 35, of Naugatuck, was stopped and waiting to turn left into the St Rose Church parking lot, police said.

Westbound motorist Marie-Louise Engstrom, 21, of 16 Quarry Ridge Road, who was driving a 1996 Toyota Camry, stopped behind the sanding truck, police said.

Westbound motorist Lawrence Scully, 63, of Trumbull, who was driving a 1994 Chrysler LHS, stopped behind the Toyota, police said.

At that time, westbound motorist Richard Kerrigan, 50, of Monroe, who was driving a 1995 Freightliner oil delivery truck, drove into the rear end of the Chrysler, pushing the Chrysler into the rear end of the Toyota. That impact pushed the Toyota into the rear end of the sanding truck, police said.

Police issued Kerrigan an infraction ticket for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Honda Off Road

Motorist April Scheuerell, 17, of 4 Narragansett Trail was driving a 2002 Honda Civic sedan northward on Boggs Hill Road, near Willow Brook Lane, at about 8 am February 3, police said. While negotiating a curve to the left, Scheuerell lost control of the auto and slid off the right side of the road, colliding with two trees, police report.

Scheuerell received a bump on the nose. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps went to the accident. Police verbally warned Scheuerell for traveling too fast for conditions.
