SNAPSHOT for October 10, 1997: JOE GARGANO

Occupation: Teacher of business at New Fairfield High School; assistant coach,

Girls' Basketball Team; interior and exterior painter.

I've been a teacher going on 33 years now and I still love it. I especially

enjoy coaching the girls because they're interested in learning the theory of

the game. The boys think they know it all.

How long in Newtown: We've lived here 12 years. We moved from Oxford to be

closer to my job.

Biggest change: There are a lot of new faces and new developments in town.

We've got an aerial photo of our Currituck Road house from awhile back when it

was the only one on the street. It was built in 1895.

Family: My wife, Anne, is an accountant at Redding Hills Country Club in

Wilton. We have a son, Jay, 23, who works and attends school, and a daughter,

Meghan, 22, who goes to WestConn.

Pets: A dog named Sydney and two cats whose names I'm not sure of. You can

tell I'm a dog person.

Hobbies: At school, I support the organization known as Future Business

Leaders of America.

One of my special causes is the "Paul and Lisa Program," a group based in

Essex that works to stop sexual exploitation of young people.

As vice president, I'm in charge of the educational aspect. We've already had

four separate informational shows taped at New Fairfield and there's one

coming up Saturday evening, October 11, on the Arts and Entertainment network.

I think the show is called "Investigative Files." You should watch for it.

Personal philosophy: While I'm at school, I try to say "hello" to all the

students first thing. Adults always expect kids to say something to them

first, but a lot of kids are shy. They look big and tough, but they're really

not.

To be a teacher, you have to understand students and it really helps to have

children of your own. If I had it all to do over again, I'd still be a

teacher. You need to enjoy what you're doing in this life.
