Missed By All

Who Knew Her

Alma L. Durkin, 96, of Brewster, N.Y., died March 4 at her daughter’s home in Brewster. Mrs Durkin was born January 10, 1911, in Verbank, N.Y., to Moses and Grace (Johnson) LaMere.

She was a 1929 graduated of Brewster High School and married William J. Durkin on June 10, 1933, at St Lawrence O’Toole Church in Brewster. Mr Durkin died May 3, 1999.

Mrs Durkin is survived by her three sons, Edward J. Durkin and his wife Annmarie of Sandy Hook, William J. Durkin, Jr, of Pawling, N.Y., and David P. Durkin and his wife, Susan, of Rensselaer, N.Y.; two daughters, Dorothy D. Eastwood and her husband, Kenneth, of Brewster and Jeanette Hatley and her husband, Jim, of Clovis, Calif.; a sister, Harriet Principe of Ridgefield; and a sister-in-law Gertrude Durkin of Patterson, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Ralph and Everett LaMere; and a sister, Grace Eleanor Pedersen, predeceased her.

Mrs Durkin worked in the St Lawrence O’Toole School cafeteria for 11 years before working for Garden Street School in Brewster as an aide from 1974 to her retirement in 1983. She had worked for New York State Electric & Gas  Corporation as a young lady from 1929 to 1933.

Mrs Durkin was a parishioner of St Lawrence O’Toole Church and belonged to the St Lawrence O’Toole Seniors. She volunteered for many years at the Putnam Hospital Eagle Eye Thrift Shop in Brewster as well as serving as a poll inspector during elections. Mrs Durkin was avid crocheter, enjoyed visiting with friends, and was never without her camera. There could always be found a treat of something sweet for her grandchildren in her home.

Throughout her life, a thoughtful word and a smile were always there for a friend or co-worker, but it was the love of and for her family that was paramount. All who knew her will miss her.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 7 at St Lawrence O’Toole Church, Brewster. Interment followed at St Lawrence O’Toole Cemetery.
