Woman Ejected From SUV In Multiple-Impact I-84 Crash
A woman passenger who was riding in a SUV was ejected onto Interstate 84's grassy median in a spectacular two-vehicle collision that occurred midday on Sunday, February 21, state police said.
The incident caused travel delays on the highway.
State police said that at about 12:35 pm, motorist Carlo Nicoletti, 40, of Port Jervis, N.Y., was driving a 2003 Honda CR-V SUV westward in the right lane of two lanes, about one-half mile east of Exit 9, as motorist Brian Firstbrook, 54, of Ridgefield was driving a 2010 Volvo XC-60 SUV in the left lane, slightly behind the Honda.
The Honda then began to change lanes to the left, state police said.
However, the left-rear section of the Honda made contact with the right-front section of the Volvo, causing the Honda to turn sideways and face the highway median, state police said.
The Honda then went out of control and traveled off the highway to the left, entering the median, state police said. The Honda hit an embankment, went airborne, and then rolled. While on the median, a passenger in the Honda was ejected from the vehicle.
After rolling over, the Honda landed on its wheels and traveled back across the westbound highway to the right, striking some flex-beam metal guardrailing along the right road shoulder with its front end, state police said.
The Honda then turned to the left and followed the guardrailing for about 100 feet, after which it went off the roadway to the right at the point where the guardrailing ended, state police said.
The Honda entered a wooded area off the right side of the road, where it rolled over and came to rest on its left side positioned up against a tree, state police said.
The Volvo came to a controlled stop on the highway median, state police said. Volvo driver Firstbrook was not injured, according to state police.
State police said that during the accident, Honda passenger Zuzana Nicoletti, 32, of Port Jervis, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the Honda, landing on the highway's grass median.
Carlo and Zuzana Nicoletti were both transported by ambulance to Danbury Hospital for medical attention, state police said. State police described both persons' injuries as apparently minor.
Carlo Nicoletti was treated at the hospital on February 21 and then released; Zuzana Nicoletti was admitted as a patient at the hospital and then discharged on February 22, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
