Former Assistant Chief Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department
William Lewis Slocum, 86, died September 15 in North Carolina. He was a former resident and served at one time as assistant chief for Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department, as well as the Southbury Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr Slocum was a World War II Navy veteran and was employed with the State of Connecticut at Southbury Training School for 33 years. He was a member of St Timothyâs Episcopal Church, Disabled American Veterans, VFW, and was 1999 State Employee of the Year at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C.
He enjoyed reunions with shipmates of the USS Greene, the Yankees, and baking bread.
In addition to Nancy Scott Slocum, his wife of 59 years, he is survived by one daughter, Nancy Slocum Bunch and her husband, Kenneth, of Winterville, N.C.; one brother, Richard Slocum of New Hampshire; and three sisters, Jane Thomas of Colorado, Susan Fernantes of Connecticut, and Marion Webber of New Hampshire.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 20, at 2 pm, in St Timothyâs Episcopal Church, Greenville. Private inurnment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Estates, Grifton, N.C., with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of oneâs choice.
