Two Local Thespians In Westchester Broadway Anniversary Production Of 'Poppins'

ELMSFORD, N.Y. — Westchester Broadway Theatre (WBT) is celebrating 40 years of Broadway musicals and fine dining with a production of Mary Poppins. The cherished 1964 Disney film has been re-imagined into a spectacular new musical, with performances continuing to July 27. The show has been created, in collaboration with Cameron Mackintosh, by Academy Award-winning screenwriter and Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.

It delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Bert, the jack-of-all trades, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes both children and adults alike on many magical and memorable adventures, discovering a world where “anything can happen if you let it.”

The staged show features all of the unforgettable songs of the movie, from “Feed the Birds,” “Jolly Holiday” and “Step in Time” to the Academy Award-winning “Chim-Chim Cher-ee.”

The multi-talented cast for WBT’s production features Lauren Blackman as Mary Poppins, Leo Ash Evens as Bert, Joe Dellger as Mr Banks, Leisa Mathers as Mrs Banks, Karen Murphy as Mrs Brill, Peter Cormican as Admiral Bloom, and Jan Neuberger of Newtown as Miss Andrews.

Jane Banks is being played by Jane Shearin of Newtown and Michelle Moughan in alternating performances. Brandon Singel and Gabriel Reis are, alternately, playing Michael Banks.

The productions is directed and choreographed by WBT favorite Richard Stafford, who has been at the helm for many WBT productions including Guys & Dolls, Fiddler On The Roof, Can-Can, George M!, Hairspray, and others.

Curtain is Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, with dinner at 6:30 pm and the show beginning at 8; Sunday evenings, 5:30 and 7, respectively.

Matinees are Thursday and Friday, with lunch at 11:30 and showtime 1 pm; and Sunday, noon and 1:30. Wednesday’s midday schedule is also lunch at 11:30 and show at 1, but only through the end of June.

Tickets are $54 to $80 for dinner and show (plus tax), depending on the performances chosen; beverage service and gratuities are not included in the ticket price. Discounts are available for children, students, and senior citizens at selected performances.

The voters certainly spoke — and I respect the outcome — but let’s not forget that a “majority” doesn’t mean everyone agreed. Many of us are deeply concerned about the rising cost of living here. Supporting schools and services is important, but so is ensuring that residents can afford to stay in the town they love. We all want Newtown to be a great place to live, but lately, it’s starting to feel less like “Nicer in Newtown” and more like “More Expensive in Newtown.” That’s not sustainable, and it’s not a criticism of the town itself — it’s a call for responsible budgeting and long-term planning that doesn’t rely on tax increases year after year. I hope future decisions will reflect not just the desire to maintain services, but also the need to ease the financial burden on residents.

Budget, Capital Projects Pass: Officials Respond

I appreciate the passion behind this message, and I absolutely understand the desire to invest in our town. That said, I voted no — not because I don't care about Newtown, but because I do. Fiscal responsibility is not about ignoring problems, it’s about making sure we address them in a sustainable and transparent way. It’s frustrating to feel like every year there’s a new “urgent” reason to raise taxes, with little serious effort to curb spending or prioritize needs. I worry this just sets the stage for another round of increases next year. That doesn't mean I’m against education, safety, or our town’s future — it means I believe in accountability and in asking tough questions about how our money is managed. Voting no wasn't a rejection of Newtown — it was a call for more thoughtful, balanced leadership. I hope future conversations can include all perspectives, not just those willing to write a bigger check.

The voters spoke, loud and clear that they support our schools and municipal services. The majority vote was a mandate to keep delivering well rated education services and keep it" Nicer in Newtown."

Thank you LeReine, for speaking out about this. The list of public servants who are unfairly targeted for abuse just for doing their jobs has been growing. It is a testament to the power of propaganda that otherwise good and well-meaning people can get so emotional as to act out in this way.
