Is Decorated American Tin
HARTFORD, CONN. â On Sunday, March 9, at 1 pm, Lewis Scranton of Killingworth, Conn., will discuss the identification, condition and form of American painted tin and demonstrate the difference between painted versus stenciled tin. He will share items from his personal collection as part of the talk.Â
Scranton began collecting antiques 50 years ago and has been a full time dealer for the past 40 years. He started selling pieces from his collection to make room for more. He would pick up pieces and sell to well-known dealers and became known as the âYankee Peddler.â He has long specialized in New England pottery, most notably redware. Many of his personal redware items are featured in the book, Kitchen Ceramics.Â
He is a past president of the American Antiques Dealers Association. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Killingworth Historical Society, the Deacon John Gray House in Madison, Conn., the Madison Historical Society and the Dorothy Whitfield Historical SocietyâHighland House in Guilford, Conn.
In his spare time he is renovating a Nineteenth Century schoolhouse located on his property in Killingworth, which will become his antiques gallery.Â
Scranton exhibits at 23 antiques shows a year and conducts business from his Eighteenth Century home by appointment, 860-633-1060.Â
