A special tribute in the memory of Al Taubert will be held Saturday, October 7, at Blue & Gold Stadium.

The program will begin at 6:30 pm and at 7 pm the Newtown High School boys’ soccer team will host Immaculate in a South-West Conference showdown.

Taubert, who died in December of 2001 at the age of 71, was chief founder of youth soccer in Newtown and aided in the development of the sport statewide. Above all, he was known as a giving teacher. The lessons Al taught on the field were the same he imparted off it.

This tribute holds special meaning for NHS senior Mark Cinquegrana, Brian Conroy, Aron Fay, Mike Klein, Matt Norris and Nick Sando as they represent the last group of soccer players who were personally coached and trained by Al during their early travel soccer years.

As recognition, the entire high school team has dedicated their fall season to Al.

“Al’s love of soccer along with his knowledge and sense of humor fueled the growth of soccer and enhanced its quality in Newtown,” said NHS head coach Brian Neumeyer. “He coached and trained many of our former players and contributed greatly to our program’s success. Al was special and will always be a part of Newtown soccer.”

Taubert started the Newtown Soccer Club in 1972 with only 14 players; it is now an organization that serves more then 1,600 players on recreational, travel and premier teams. Taubert was also among the first “A” licensed coaches – the highest designation offered by the U.S. Soccer Federation – and he spent 30 years teaching parents how to coach soccer and spearheaded the movement to bring professional trainers to Newtown’s travel teams. He also instituted formal training clinics for the recreational teams as well.

Taubert had held coaching positions at Western Connecticut State University, Fairfield University, Newtown High School as well as a number of soccer camps.

In addition to a special ceremony paying tribute to Mr Taubert, there will be face painting, give-aways, a skills competition and a traditional 50-50 raffle. NHS will donate its share of the proceeds to charity.
