The Newtown sixth-grade girls' travel basket team (the Lady Hawks) upset No. 2 Darien and advanced into the semifinals of the Tri County Board League playoffs. Sara Kelley scored 13 points and Kate Bowen added seven in a 32-26 win.

The Newtown sixth-grade girls’ travel basket team (the Lady Hawks) upset No. 2 Darien and advanced into the semifinals of the Tri County Board League playoffs. Sara Kelley scored 13 points and Kate Bowen added seven in a 32-26 win.

The Newtown eight-grade boys’ travel basketball team did the same, defeating Greenwich and New Canaan to earn a semifinal game against No. 1 seed Danbury Broadview. Kevin Troy scored 36 points in the two wins.

Here are all the results from around the divisions:

Boys 8th –

Newtown 66, Greenwich 39 – A suffocating halfcourt trap in the second half created numerous turnovers, leading Newtown to the victory in the Tri County Board League playoffs. Kevin Troy played an outstanding overall game leading the team in rebounds and scoring 19 points. Mike Maher played a fine overall game contributing 14 points. PJ Cochrane scored nine and did a good job defensively. Greg Larnerd was strong off the boards and scored six.

Newtown 63, New Canaan 34 – Jason Smith scored 13 points and led a tough full court defense, leading Newtown into the TCBL Final Four. Greg Rodden played a strong overall game, contributing seven points. Dylan Clark was strong off the boards and scored nine. Dan Smith was terrific at the point, applying pressure all game long, Kevin Troy led the team in with 17 points. The locals will square off with No. 1 seed Danbury Broadview on Saturday (the two squads split their games during the regular season).

Boys 7th –

Monroe 53, Newtown 50 – Newtown lost a heart breaker in the final seconds of the opening round of the TCBL playoffs. Newtown stayed within four points for most of the game and finally took a four-point lead with 1:30 left in the game. But the locals couldn’t convert some shots down the stretch, while Monroe sank a three-pointer with 15 seconds left to win the game. Kurt Nacewicz and John Grimaldi combined for 22 points to lead Newtown, with Connor Collier, Dan Quinn, and Ricky Gallucci adding another 20 points. David Bray, Ian Cooper, Cole Depuy, and Keith McGrath rounded out the scoring.

Boys 6th –

Newtown 43, Fairfield 33 – Andy Lapple (10 points, 4 assists, 2 steals, 4 rebounds) led the Hawks with a terrific all-around game. Daniel Lynch (8 points, 4 assists, 6 steals), Ralph Sergiovanni (7 points, 11 rebounds) and George Zaruba (7 points, 5 rebounds) combined to shut down Fairfield’s offense and provide key baskets in the second half.

Newtown 56, Danbury 23 – Daniel Lynch (9 points, 11 steals, 4 assists), Ralph Sergiovanni (10 points, 9 rebounds) and Peter Young (6 points, 4 rebounds) led Newtown in the rout. Ryan Schmidt (6 points) and Nicky Tarantino (4 points) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks.

Monroe 42, Newtown 31 – Jeff DiNicola (6 points, 2 assists, 3 steals) and Kyle Kromberg (6 points, 4 steals, 5 rebounds) had great all-around games for the Hawks. George Zaruba hauled down 17 rebounds and played well defensively in the losing effort.

Newtown 29, Wilton 25 – George Zaruba (11 points, 4 steals, 12 rebounds) and Kyle Kromberg (6 points, 2 steals, 4 rebounds) were the difference for Newtown in this defensive contest. Casey Tenney (4 key steals, 3 rebounds), Ryan Schmidt (4 points) and Peter Young (2 points, 2 steals, 2 assists) also contributed key plays for the Hawks.

Fairfield 46, Newtown 34 – Kyle Kromberg (8 points, 3 steals, 6 rebounds) and Ralph Sergiovanni (10 points, 10 rebounds) had big games for Newtown. Nicky Tarantino (5 assists, 2 steals), George Zaruba (7 points, 7 rebounds), Andy Lapple (3 steals, 6 rebounds) and Casey Tenney (4 steals) contributed solid performances for the Hawks.

New Fairfield 29, Newtown 27 – George Zaruba (10 points, 5 steals, 12 rebounds) and Ryan Schmidt (3 points, 2 steals, 5 rebounds) combined to keep the Hawks close in another defensive battle. Jeff DiNicola (4 steals, 4 rebounds) led the Newtown defense in the loss.

Ridgefield 48, Newtown 41 – Andy Lapple turned in another strong offensive performance netting 12 points and handing out 2 assists. Casey Tenney (6 points), Daniel Lynch (10 points, 8 steals) and Nicky Tarantino (3 points, assist, steal) and helped keep the Hawks in the game.

Girls 6th –

Newtown 31, Weston 12 – Newtown opened up the Tri County Board League single elimination playoffs by beating Weston. Sara Kelley led all scorers with 12 points while Kaitlin Marsden chipped in with six. Nicole Elias and Carolyn Fagan each added four while Kate Bowen was 3-of-4 from the line. Nicole Elias, Kaitlin Marsden, Susan Mason and Carolyn Fagan combined for 29 rebounds to control the boards for Newtown.

Newtown 32, Darien 26 – The Lady Hawks pulled off a huge upset win over No. 2 Darien and advanced to the semifinals in the TCBL playoffs. Newtown, No. 7, trailed early but took the lead and never looked back. Sara Kelley led all scorers with 13 points while Kate Bowen added seven. Kaitlin Marsden and Ally Modzelewski combined for nine points while Susan Mason added a bucket. Kristen Tanner, Jennifer Daily and Stephanie Suhoza played well defensively for the Lady Hawks

Girls 5th –

Westport 21, Newtown 10 – The Nighthawks played even with Westport in the second half but couldn’t overcome an 11-point halftime deficit. Maggie Donohue led the team with four points and nine rebounds. Ali Pliszka, Meghan Loose, Cady Jackman and Andrea Nazer all contributed points.

Junior Boys –

Lakers 38, Yellow Submarines 25 – Matt Mascolo canned 16 points and Ryan Boucher added 14 to lead the Lakers to the win. Nick Saviano grabbed 12 rebounds and Robbie Blanc dished off eight assists. Kevin Walsh came up with five steals. For the Subs, Steve Osmolik had six points while Dan Berlingeri, Robert Brautigam and Josh Baron had solid performances.

Timberwolves 33, Bullets 27 – Dan Giorno had 15 points and 10 rebounds while Ryan Wilson had 19 rebounds to lead the T-Wolves to the win. Michael Whitley-Rodriguez and Jamie Vavrek contributed to the offense. For the Bullets, Charlie Kerr popped in nine points as Steve Oberstadt, Kris Kling and Kenton Lord played well.

Huskies 54, Jazz 35 – Erik Dreher poured in 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lift the Huskies to the win. Nick Urso added seven points and three steals as Mark Scheunemann dished off four assists. For the Jazz, Brendan Martin had 13 points while Dan Lawrence had nine. Andrew Meisel and Zach Brazo had strong performances.

Wildcats 52, Nitro 45 – Jake DeVellis poured in 26 points to power the Wildcats to the win. Ryan Drummond had eight points and Tim Larsen had seven. Brett LeBlanc pulled down eight rebounds. For the Nitro, Zack Varga and Matt Brede combined for 21 points. Kyle DiNicola grabbed eight rebounds and Brian Reszoly grabbed six.

Intermediate Boys –

Screaming Eagles 19, Sonics 18 – Robbie Phillips scored eight points and Matt Datin grabbed 12 points as the Eagles nipped the Sonics. Ryan Murphy dished off five assists and Zack Dent made three assists. Jeff Spencer scored the game-winner with 10 seconds left. For the Sonics, Alex Miller and Ben Mahony combined for 13 points.

Nighthawks 35, Wildcats 33 (OT) – Tom Capaziello and Eric Thornberg combined for 18 points as the Nighthawks defeated the Wildcats in overtime. Jamey Tibbetts added eight points while James Sharpe and Austin Jones played well. For the ‘Cats, Matt Baier canned 18 points as Max Brazo (four assists), Ben Miles (four steals) and Henry Helgren (five rebounds) had strong floor games.

Bullets 42, Celtics 22 – Sam Kerr and Kevin O’Connell combined for 27 points while Matt Hamilton grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Bullets to the win. Andre Capoziello dished off six assists and Kyle Vignone made eight steals. For the Celtics, Brendan Blawie canned six points and Brandon Body pulled down five rebounds. Ben Kaye and Yanni Koutmos played well.

Gators 33, Nets 20 – Nick Nazer scored 12 points to lead the Gators to the win. Thomas Cascia, Caleb Benore and Kevin Dill also played well. For the Nets, Chris Winters and Dan Greenwood popped in four points apiece. Adam Stadalius played well.

Midget Girls –

Dalmatians versus Celtics – Allison Blume, Kelly O’Sullivan, Caroline Kingsley and Mikaela McGuire led the Dalmatians while Stephanie Clavette, Sarah Principi, Abby Doski and Kirsten DiGiralamo powered the Celtics.

Wolverines versus Mustangs – Julia Trudell, Kelsey Parker, Rebecca Silveira and Jane Sclafani led the Wolverines as Alyssa Finkenstadt, Stephanie Roman, Katie McManus and Mary Kay Blawie powered the Mustangs.

Cougars versus Hoopsters – Lia Tassinari and Taylor Brady led the Cougars while Jenna Poeltl, Natalie Landfair, Courtney Escoda and Mary Hamula played well for the Hoopsters.

Midget Boys –

Raptors versus Dragons – Colin Cooper, Don Morrissey, Dan Gustafson and Harrison Buzzi had strong floor games for the Raptors as Kevin LeBlanc, Brian LeBlanc, Mason West and Tommy Stewart powered the Dragons.

Orangemen versus Wizards – Josh Barrett, David Lucia, Kevin Phillips and Robbie Daigle played well for the Orangemen while Sean Watkins, Christian Barrett, Taylor Steimle and Matt Rahtelli anchored the Wizards.

Thundercats versus Nighthawks – Griffin Paynter, Scott Schmidt, Shaun Mangold and Jake Feinstein had fine floor games for the ‘Cats as Connor Quinn, Kevin Shpunt, Will Fletcher and Justin Spath played well for the ‘Hawks.

Thundercats versus Blue Devils – Jake Feinstein, Pieter Martini, Rob Uhde and Evan Wexler had strong performances for the ‘Cats as Connor Blanc, Chad Magoulas, Tomas Nazer and Reid Schmidt played well for the Devils.

Blue Devils versus Bulldogs – Sam Langdon, Mac Morlock, Reid Schmidt and Trey Trudell powered the Devils while Justin DeVellis, Sean Ross, Mike LoBosco and Alex Strzelecki played well for the ‘Dogs.

76ers versus Gators – Max Lopez, David Cartisano, Alex Woznick and Robert Andreotta played well for the Sixers as Ben Stoller, Matt Vavrek, Sam Ashey and Austin Ryder anchored the Gators.

Cougars versus Vipers – Patrick Sullivan, Domenick Fedak, Christian Mather and David Tortora played well for the Cougars as Joe Davis, Scott Runkle, Chase Hutchison and Jonathan Vaughan played well for the Vipers.

Hurricanes versus Cardinals – Michael Scharfenberg, Michael Senf, Erik Samuelson and Dillon Kelley played well for the ‘Canes as the Cards were paced by Ryan Coe, Nick Gerbo, Jordan Buyers and Jimmy Russo.

Vipers versus Hurricanes – Scott Runkle, Jeffrey Grasso, Gary Braun and Ryan Palmer led the Vipers as Dan Herbert, Michael Daubert, Charlie Pryor and Michael Greenwood led the ‘Canes.

Dragons versus Cardinals – Mason West, Kevin LeBlanc, Ivan Hutchison and Tommy Stewart had strong floor games for the Dragons while Ryan O’Keefe, Ricky Kerins, Johnny Kerins and Jim Russo led the Cards.

Rockets versus Raptors – Charlie Feltch, Luke Piazza, Greg Horne and Tom Bauer led the Rockets and Colin Cooper, Gavin Scallon, Dan Morrissey and Robbie Hughes led the Raptors.

Thundercats versus Lakers – Jake Feinstein, Tyler Coleman, Stefan Dillinger and Rob Uhde had solid performances for the ‘Cats while Brandon Marks, Kyle Wilcox, Michael Fitzsimmons and Brandan Callery paced the Lakers.

Orangemen versus Nighthawks – Josh Barrett, Devon DiNicola, David Lucia, Rob Daigle and Tanner Sowa powered the Orangemen as Connor Quinn, Kory Kling, Will Fletcher and Mike Reutzel anchored the ‘Hawks.

Cougars versus Gators – Dominick Fedak, David Tortora, Christian Maher and Neil Davis played well for the Cougars as Kevin Morrissey, Kyle Harrington, Kyle Morrissey and Charlie Helgren led the Gators.

Bulldogs versus Wizards – Jack Rahansky, Josh Villa, Daniel Mello-Bethke and Jack Leighton powered the ‘Dogs as Cavan McCaffrey, Christian Barret, Sean Watkins and Peter Kerns powered the Wiz.

76ers versus Blue Devils – Tyler Gibney, Max Lopez, Alex Woznick and Ryan Crowell had fine floor games for the Sixers while Connor Blanc, Chris Tenney, Sam Langdon and Patrick Thornberg paced the Devils.
