Melissa Grossman, daughter of John Grossman and Gail Carboy Grossman, received a student leadership recognition award for outstanding student leadership as photography editor of The Echo, Western Connecticut State University’s newspaper.  She is a freshman at WCSU.

St Joseph High School named several Newtown students to its third quarter honor roll recently. Freshman Meghan Bartow received principal’s honor roll. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Bartow. Three students were named to the honor roll: junior Anthony Bombaci, son of Mr and Mrs Wayne Bombaci, freshman Johanna Bombaci, daughter of Mr and Mrs Wayne Bombaci, and freshman Holly Phaneuf, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Phaneuf.

Kara Henry of Sandy Hook, a history major at Lafayette College in Easton, Penn., recently worked with several other students and an international sculptor and painter to produce “Press and Vent,” a six and a half foot tall concrete sculpture that also functions as a printing press. The students worked with artist Emil Lukas.

Cadet Greg Whalen

Cadet Greg Whalen, son of John and Kelly Whalen of Newtown, recently earned the Fine Arts Ribbon for superior academic achievement, individual performance, and appreciation for the arts (for participating in drama) for the second time at the Missouri Military Academy. Cadet Whalen was also listed on the Merit Roll for his academic and military grades.

Newtown High School graduates Heather Campbell and Rex Krueger presented papers at the 16th Annual National Undergraduate Literature Conference at Weber State University in Ogden Utah recently. The two were the only presenters from Connecticut and were selected from over 300 papers submitted for the conference.

Mr Krueger, a junior, is an English major with a concentration in writing, while Miss Campbell is a senior liberal studies major with minors in English, women’s studies and studio art.

Stephen Dukenski of Newtown was named to the dean’s list for the spring term at Elmira College. He is the son of Reverend Carolyn and Ronald Dukenski. Mr Dukenski anticipates majoring in classical studies. He is a 2000 graduate of Newtown High School.

The University of Connecticut at Storrs honored several Newtown residents for maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.5 during the spring and fall semesters of 2000 during a Scholars Day ceremony. The following students from Newtown were named: Gregory Hays, Sharon Hufner, and Jedidiah Kiernan. Sandy Hook residents Karen Hennessey and Erin Sepe were also honored.
