Monarch Butterflies From Connecticut To Mexico

DERBY — The Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society, in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Kellogg Environmental Center, will host a slide presentation and talk, “Monarch Butterflies: Connecticut to Mexico.”

The program will take place at the Kellogg Environmental Center on Tuesday, March 21, at 7:30 pm.

Learn about the life cycle of this fascinating insect and follow its incredible migration of more than 2,000 miles to Mexico to spend the winter. See the life of the Monarch in detail, and the impact humans have had on these butterflies in both Connecticut and Mexico.

Joyce Crebase will explain this amazing story using her slides and experiences from her trip to Mexico to follow the Monarchs. Ms Crebase, a former science teacher, has traveled extensively through the world, and has taken courses in various countries including Trinidad, Ecuador, Kenya, Bermuda, Costa Rica, and Mexico.

She attended a three-day workshop for teachers on monarch butterflies in New Jersey, and then worked as staff the next two years. She also spent a week in Mexico learning about the culture of Mexico and how it impacts the Monarch.

Every year Ms Crebase raises Monarch butterflies from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to adult. She enjoys sharing her discoveries with other adults and students.

Kellogg Environmental Center is at 500 Hawthorne Avenue. A donation of $4 for nonmembers of the Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society is requested.

For further information, directions, or to register, phone the Kellogg Environmental Center at 734-2513 or contact Dennis Kocyla at 734-9325 or DennisK32@yahoo.com.
