Occupation: Human Resources Manager for Eaton Corporation in Bethel. Mr Recht

was also chosen to head the 1997 $2.9 million campaign for United Way of

Fairfield County.

How long in Newtown: I've lived here twice! We moved away to St Louis in 1971

and came back in 1977. It's been nearly 20 years since we returned and moved

into our home on Tunnel Road.

Family: My wife, Carol, and I have three children. They are Hilary, 35, Brian

33, and Chris, 29. We have two grandchildren.

Pets: Our German shepherd, Jake, acts as the security system for the Christmas

tree business that we run on a couple of acres. He's on the case!

Hobbies: I guess you could say it's the Christmas Tree business because it

takes a lot of time and I love doing it.

We planted the first trees in 1981 and it takes eight to ten years for them to

reach six feet. There's a lot to do -- with the planting, mowing, weeding,

shearing and selling.

It's really just a lot of fun -- which it has to be if you're going to stand

out there in the cold weather all day. You meet an awful lot of nice people.

Our customers come from all over and it's mostly through word-of-mouth.

Biggest change: The way the houses are popping up all over. When our kids were

small we could go hiking everywhere. Now there are houses everywhere.

But that's not all bad. If you move into a place like Newtown that is heavily

wooded, you can't expect it to stay that way. It's too nice a town and more

and more people want to live here.

Personal philosophy: I think we need to be aware of the good things in life

and especially of the good things that others do -- and we don't have to look

far to see these things.

In our own community, I'm amazed at how dedicated people are. A whole lot of

people are doing things in silence without a lot of fuss. You have to

appreciate that -- the extent to which people want to help other folks.
