The 2010 Election marks the first year the local Health District is coordinating a new public health outreach by providing flu vaccinations to residents who want them on Election Day.

“The idea is the resident is taking the time to go to their polling place to vote and while they are there, they can conveniently visit another room at the building at Reed Intermediate School and Newtown Middle School and get a flu shot,” District Director Donna Culbert said in a release.

Bethel Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) with support from the Newtown VNA and the Health District will be providing those flu shots for visitors to the polls November 2, Election Day. The Reed Intermediate School session runs from 9 am to noon, while the “Vote & Vax” program continues at Newtown Middle School from 5 to 8 pm.

Bethel VNA will accept the following insurance to cover the cost of shots: Medicare, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Oxford, HealthNet, Aetna, Connecticare. And Newtown VNA will help to provide flu shots to residents who do not have health insurance.

The Newtown Health District and the Newtown VNA want residents to heed the advice of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)  “Take 3” Actions to Fight the Flu

Flu is a serious contagious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death.  In 2009-2010, a new and very different flu virus called 2009 H1N1, spread worldwide causing the first flu pandemic in more than 40 years.

Flu is unpredictable, but the CDC expects the 2009 H1N1 virus to spread this upcoming season along with other seasonal flu viruses.
