NEW HAVEN – A school record finish of 3:22.02 in the 400-yard freestyle relay lifted the Newtown High School swim team to a fifth-place finish at the CIAC Class L state championships last week at Southern Connecticut State University.

Sophomore Anthony Fiore (52.40 in his split), freshman Brendan Deveney (50.17), sophomore Stefan Toi (50.65) and senior Max Barrett (49.80) gave the Nighthawks their best finish at the state championships in quite some time and pretty much capped a terrific year that saw the locals finish 8-3 overall and fourth in the South-West Conference championships.

But there was still the matter of the CIAC State Open last Saturday at Yale University in New Haven and the 400 freestyle relay team concluded that with an 11th-place finish … a short while after the same foursome finished 17th in the 200 medley relay.

As a team, the ‘Hawks finished 29th in the Opens.
