Three Newtown Residents Participate In A Mission To Danbury
A group of 12- and 13-year-olds participated in a mission trip to Danbury on July 18. The group of youth from the Walnut Hill Community Church in Bethel, included three Newtown residents, Haley Malin and twins Arie and Michelle Priolo. The groupâs mission trip culminated in a party for 50 children between the ages of 1 and 9 at the Jericho House, which houses downtown faith-based charitable organizations serving the cityâs poor.
The trip was created to bring the children together with children from low-income areas. The group got together to form gift bags, which were stuffed with donated items, and prepare for the party before hand. The Walnut Hill Community Church is dedicated to praying, learning, giving and loving, and hosts different events based around charity every year. This mission trip included children from different towns in the area.
The common link among the 50 children invited to the July 18 party is that all are economically disadvantaged, said Carrie Amos, director of operations at Jericho Partnership Inc, the umbrella organization for a dozen inner-city ministries and one of the mission tripâs sponsors. The children are all being served by social service agencies in the city. Portuguese and Spanish translators were on hand to tell parents about Jericho Partnershipâs ministries and programs.
On July 15, the Walnut Hill Community Church group put together 50 bags for the children at Jericho House. Each bag contained an age- and gender-appropriate gift, some Christian materials, and a box of cake mix, frosting, and candles. âThe bags will be given to the parents, who can save them until their childâs birthday or use them that night at home,â Ms Amos said.
On July 18 the afternoon party ran from 5 to 6:30 pm and included a meal of chicken nuggets, vegetables, fresh fruit, and ice cream sundaes; age-appropriate crafts and, in the Cambodian New Life Church in the same building, Veggie Tales videos and sing-along music.
Gifts and other bag stuffers were donated by Morning Star bookstore, Stop & Shop, Big Y, Party Stop, Costco, and by individuals who donated cash.
