To the Editor:
After two failed budged votes, the FFH Authority has finally admitted that the âtrailâ listed as part of the $6,020,000 bond issue in the debt service portion of the budget is really a road to the water bunkers in the High Meadow ⦠John Reed said, âthat portion [of the trail] will be resurfaced for the importance of getting trucks through, and weâre piggy-backing as the first phase of our trail.â (Newtown Bee May 18, 2007). Looks like the FFH Authority must believe calling it a trail will make the $42,000 expenditure more palatable to citizens struggling to cope with yearly increases in taxes.
However nice it might be to provide a new, paved walking or biking path, this new road and trail cannot be considered a high priority. People are already enjoying the existing road to the water bunkers that extends from the softball diamond to the top of the hill. Once there, hikers enjoy a magnificent view of the valley below. Less able walkers and youthful bikers are seen throughout the easier sidewalks and roads on the campus.
So why are they building a new road? What are the hidden plans that would destroy the existing road? When will the people know what the plans are or are we not going to be informed? Just like the renovation of Bridgeport Hall to become a town hall, the selectmen and the FFH Authority will reveal their plans when and if they wish. They will ask the P&Z to approve one more amendment to their so-called master plan, and will proceed to spend our money as they wish.
Transparency in government? Let the people know your future plans? Not in this administration! The âtrailâ is one more example of keeping the public in the dark.
