Independent Living Day

To the Editor:

“I can’t thank you enough.” “What an amazing job.” “I don’t know what I would have done without the help.” “I loved having the chance to talk with the young people.” “I will definitely call again next year.”

Yes, Newtown Youth Services’ Eighth Annual Independent Living Day was a success. Comments made by the beneficiaries of the day, Newtown’s senior citizens, reflect its tenor.

Seventy-four volunteers assisted about 50 seniors over the course of Saturday. Teams of adult and youth volunteers and families spanned the town washing windows, raking leaves, hanging curtains, planting flowers, putting in screens — welcoming spring, finally!

Many, many thanks to the wonderfully generous businesses who donated to our day: Bagel Delight, Dunkin’ Donuts, Newtown Deli, Starbucks, and Big Y. Of course, the day would not be possible if it weren’t for the efforts of all the volunteers, who ranged in age from 2 to 67! Joy Kopesky and Tom Murtha, co-chairs of Independent Living Day and also members of the Newtown Youth Services’ Board of Directors, worked tirelessly to accommodate those requesting assistance. Thanks, also, to all the wonderful senior citizens who opened their homes to all and shared some wonderful stories.

Perhaps Marianne Williamson said it best, “Success means we go to sleep at night knowing that our talents and abilities were used in a way that served others.” Thank you, volunteers. A job well done!
