Lafayette Students To Experience Professional World Through ‘Externships’

EASTON, PENN. — Following the holidays, students at Lafayette College will have an unusual opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of the professional world.

About 200 students will explore a wide variety of career field by serving two- to five-day “externships” with Lafayette alumni and others who are experienced professionals in business, the arts, education, health care, law, engineering, science, government, nonprofits, and other fields.

While “shadowing” the professionals at their workplaces, the students will observe work practices, learn about careers they may consider entering after college, develop professional networking contacts, and build their resumes.

Among students participating is Michele Ann Nelson, Class of 2005. Ms Nelson, a graduate of Newtown High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science degree in neuroscience. She will shadow Dr Ronald Keyser, a 1956 Lafayette graduate who is a clinical specialist and pediatrician in the Washington Country Health Department in Hagerstown, Md. She will observe a tuberculosis clinic and school-based health facilities. She will also observe foster-care placement and cancer-screening programs and sit in on sessions involving sexually transmitted disease prevention, family planning, bioterrorism planning, and child abuse prevention.

Todd Anthony Palo, Class of 2005, also a Newtown High School graduate, is pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in history and government and law. He will shadow Donald Wurzel, director of the national security studies and analysis program at Arete Associates in Arlington, Va. Arete Associates is an advanced science and engineering company that contributes to US national security and competitiveness by providing innovative solutions to the challenging technical problems faced by the nation’s military and intelligence organizations. Todd will experience the process, dialogues, and debates involved in developing military strategies and policies.

The externship will take place during winter break January 5–23.
