It appears Newtown may have its own Nostradamis in Legislative Council member Doug Brennan. A month ago, Doug disputed architects for the Board of Education who said the 5/6 school was going to cost $32 million to build. He figured a more accurate price would be $28 million. And this week, his prediction came true as Haynes Construction of Seymour came in $4 million below projections. Doug, who says he is both attorney and engineer, says his estimation was based on a slowing economy and the fact that contractors are looking for work any way they can get it.

Speaking of Haynes Construction, I ran into Schools Building & Grounds Supervisor Dominic Posca Wednesday on his way over to Southbury. No, he wasn’t going to Denmos’, he was paying a visit to Kensington Green, the new assisted living facility, which was constructed by Haynes.

Newtown resident Ralph Portonova arrived at the Newtown Country Club Monday morning for what was only the second golf outing of his life. He had played once before – in sandals – while on vacation in the Bahamas. But he was there to play as part of the NHS Blue & Gold Booster’s Club annual tournament. And wouldn’t you know it, Ralph came within four feet of sinking a hole-in-one on the par three 8th hole.

Also at the event, Alan Helfer, who may be more well known for his involvement in soccer, helped lead his team to the first place prize. The president of the Newtown Soccer Club teamed up with Mark Korotash and Jim and Karen Ryan to take home the top prize.

And, for the third year in a row, Tim Moulton and Bill Piccirillo were members of the last place team. Both guys had to endure a bit of rubbing, but were good sports about it.

The Board of Selectmen members arrived at their meeting at the Cyrenius H. Booth Library Monday night only to discover that their meeting chambers had been taken over by the SCAN art show. They promptly packed up and headed to the Town Hall South conference room, only to find the Borough elections going on. Herb, Bill, Joe, and Jan eventually settled on a back room where they managed to get down to business.

As chairman of the Charter Revision Commission, Bill Sheluck has earned a reputation for running a tight ship and for doing his homework. A retired banker, Bill has been able to put in more than his share of hours working on the charter. But everyone is allowed to have an off day every once in a while. Bill appeared to be somewhat off his game at last week’s meeting, not having quite so many cogent, well-reasoned insights as he usually does. “Don’t abandon us now,” joked member Harry Waterbury.

Art Fuller was seen behind Edmond Town Hall hastily changing his flat tire early Tuesday morning. Art had just dropped off one kid at school and was on his way to the next stop when he discovered the flat.

Middle Gate secretary Carol Lawson was missing from school on Wednesday, but not because she was sick. Instead Ms Lawson was celebrating the birth of a granddaughter – as good an excuse as I’ve heard lately.

The over 100 volunteers who participated in Independent Living Day on Saturday did a wonderful job and should be applauded. The group helped out senior citizens around Newtown with some spring cleaning. And boy did the crew work hard.

Newtown Savings Bank President John Martocci had a birthday on Tuesday. A character from the movie Toy Story was planted in front of the bank to remind the entire community he is 55. Happy Belated Birthday, John!

Of course there are strange people in every town and there are people who do strange things. I think Linda Uhde fits into the category of people who do strange things. On Saturday, Linda woke up at 2:30 in the morning, not because she had a bad dream, but because she had to get in line at 5:30 in the morning in front of Edmond Town Hall for the upcoming Lathrop School of Dance recital that will be taking place in early June. Linda bought seven tickets for her family so they could watch her dance. Some people will do anything for an audience.

Normally I would wish everyone a nice relaxing weekend, but since Sunday is Mother’s Day, I know a lot of people will be attempting to take on Mom’s chores for at least a day. Good luck! It’s exhausting work and come Monday you’ll be calling on dear ol’ Mom for some comfort and sympathy for all the hard work you’ve done. And the amazing thing is that she’ll be there for you.

Once you’ve recovered next week, be sure to…
