The boys’ eighth-grade travel team struggled against a strong Stamford team in its only contest of the week. Here is the action:

Stamford 61, Newtown 48 – Greg Rodden scored 12 points. Bob Lapple and Mike Maher combined for 17 points. Jason Smith played well at the point.

The seventh-grade boys’ travel team won three games this past week and put their current streak at six wins in their previous seven games. Team-oriented offense was the key in the three wins. Here are the results:

Newtown 40, Darien 35 – Solid fourth-quarter defense helped Newtown earn a victory. John Grimaldi and Ricky Gallucci combined for 19 points to lead Newtown scorers. David Bray and Ian Cooper added another 11 points.

Newtown 49, Southbury 33 – Newtown charged out to a commanding 22-point halftime lead by combining smothering man-to-man defense with a solid team oriented offense. David Bray and Connor Collier combined for 22 points to lead Newtown scoring while Kurt Nacewicz, Ricky Gallucci, Keith McGrath, Cole Depuy, and Ian Cooper each scored at least four points.

Newtown 62, Weston 60 – David Bray, Kurt Nacewicz, Connor Collier, and Ricky Gallucci combined for 45 points to lead Newtown’s scoring. Ian Cooper and John Grimaldi chipped in six points apiece, and Keith McGrath and Dan Quinn rounded played well.

Kate Bowen and Sara Kelley scored 11 points each to lead the girls’ sixth-grade travel team to an easy win over Westport last weekend. Here are the results:

Norwalk 45, Newtown 24 – Sara Kelley scored eight points while Kate Bowen and Susan Mason each chipped in five to lead the Hawks.  Kailtlin Marsden added four points while Carolyn Fagan netted a hoop to round out the scoring for Newtown. Ally Modzelewski was outstanding on defense as she made numerous steals and blocked shots. Kristen Tanner passed the ball well and registered two assists.

Newtown 35, Westport 10 – Kate Bowen and Sara Kelley each scored 11 points to lead Newtown over Westport. Jennifer Dailey and Carolyn Fagan combined for seven points. Stephanie Suhoza, Ally Modzelewski and Kaitlin Marsden each added a bucket to complete the scoring. Nicole Elias and Marsden were strong off the boards for the Lady Hawks.

A halftime lead against a strong Danbury squad didn’t hold up as the boys fifth-grade travel team fell, 48-34. Here are the results:

Danbury 48, Newtown 34 – The locals couldn’t hold a halftime lead and fell to Danbury. Josh Engler led the way with nine points while Rob Carroll added five points, three rebounds and three steals.  Defensively, Ishan Tatake had seven steals against a tough Danbury team.

Monroe 31, Newtown 23 – Andrew Oravecz led Newtown with seven points as Danny White sparked the defense with five steals. Max Nacewicz also had a strong floor game with five rebounds, two steals, and a block.

Ian Doerr scored 24 points, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Knicks past the 76ers in Junior Boys action. Here are all the results:

Timberwolves 47, Sonics 27 – Dan Giorno scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the T-Wolves to the win. Michael Whitley-Rodriguez and Ryan Dilworth combined for 13 points. Kyle Kearny paced the defense. For the Sonics, Will Mahony canned 11 points as Kevin McManus dished off five assists and Mike Locorotondo grabbed seven rebounds.

Lakers 42, Jazz 31 – Matt Mascolo scored 18 points to lift the Lakers. Dan DeLaVega dished off eight assists, Ethan Johnson made seven steals, and Nick Saviano pulled down 10 rebounds. For the Jazz, Alex Meisel popped in nine points as Alex Bowen had six assists. Zach Brazo and Brendan Martin played well.

Wildcats 44, Yellow Submarines 29 – Jake DeVellis canned 15 points while Tim Larsen and Ryan Golankiewicz combined for 16 more to power the ‘Cats. Chris Basso played well on D. For the Subs, Jonathan Zigman and Jamey Goodwick combined for 17 points. Dan Berlinger and Robert Brautigam played well.

Bullets 36, Spurs 27 – Conor Martin scored 11 points and Joe Cappiello pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Bullets to the win. Kris Kling made six steals and Charlie Kerr registered eight assists. For the Spurs, Tucker Lapak had 12 points while Kurtis Liska grabbed 16 rebounds and Paul Andras made sevel steals.

76ers 56, Knicks 36 – Tom Jackman scored 15 points and Kyle Wagner added 14 more to power the 76ers. Ed White and Walter Murphy played well. For the Knicks, Ian Doerr scored 24 points and John Aminti dished off 10 assists. Christian Steimle grabbed 15 rebounds and Alex Magoulas 0played well.

Huskies 64, Nitro 54 – Erik Dreher canned 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Huskies to the win. Nick Urso canned 12 points while Ryan Hudock and Dylan Kelleher played well. For the Nitro, Zach Varga poured in 18 points while Matt Narel had 11 and Dan Curtis and Adam Cantor combined for 14 more.

Kings 24, Rockets 23 – Brett Mauro scored nine points and David Manville tossed in six to lead the Kings to the win. Rob’ O’Donnell dished off three assists as Adam Schankman played well on D. For the Rockets, Ryan Goodridge canned 10 points as Sean Ryan, Chris Murphy and Conor McManus had solid floor games.

Olivia Dillon canned a pair of crucial free throws to lead the Rockets past the Huskies in Junior Girls division action. Here are all the results:

Nightmare 40, Blue Devils 23 – Jen Brill scored 10 points, Betsy Vendel had six steals, and Chynna Smith grabbed five rebounds to lead the Nightmare over the Blue Devils. Kendra O’Connor contributed five rebounds, five steals, and three assists. Lauren Clark led the Blue Devils with 10 points while Megan Hansen dished out four assists, and Rachel Taback had three steals.

Pacers 30, Rockets 8 – Ashley Braun scored eight points to lead the Pacers. Natalie Villa and Carly Doherty were strong off the boards and Jen Brewer and Renata Villarreal led the defensive effort. Erin Nemeth and Belle Hydock scored four points each for the Rockets while Rachel Fossum and Emily Weber had solid floor games.

Lightning 24, Bulldogs 17 – Meghan Trosan and Jen O’Connell canned six points apiece to lead the Lightning over the Bulldogs. Marnie Thompson played great defense and added eight rebounds. Colleen Murphy scored four points to lead the Bulldogs with Joanna Barry leading the defense and Kat Donahue playing a great all around game.

Rockets 24, Huskies 23 – Olivia Dillon sank two crucial free throws to seal the win for the Rockets. Colleen Thornberg and Libby Feltch were strong on defense and Diana Curcuruto led the team with eight rebounds. Kristen Gucciardo scored eight points to lead the Huskies while Kelley Sullivan and Bethany Morin had great all around games.

Johnny Fracker had a solid game, scoring 18 points to lift the Gators past the Wildcats in Intermediate Boys action. Here are all the results:

Nighthawks 48, Grizzlies 18 – Tom Capozziello and Kyle O’Connor scored 12 points apiece to lead the Nighthawks to the win. Jamey Tibbetts dished off 10 assists as Oliver Powers and Steve Braun played well. For the Grizzlies, Josh Volpe, Josh Leighton and Ryan Daly played well.

Celtics 34, Huskies 33 – Evan Kennedy and Tony Vacaro combined for 18 points as the Celtics nipped the Huskies. Dana Hansen and Rich Andreotta played well. For the Huskies, Chris Caulfield canned 13 points.

Gators 30, Wildcats 16 – Johnny Fracker scored 18 points and Kevin Dill played well as the Gators overcame the Wildcats. For the ‘Cats, Leo Spinelli and Ben Miles combined for eight points as Max Brazo and Liam Ferguson had strong floor games.

Huskies 43, Lakers 26 – Chris Caulfield scored 14 points and Cameron Gehrman grabbed 10 rebounds to propel the Huskies to the win. Alex Marus dished off five assists. For the Lakers, Shane Wurtz had 16 points, Michael Shevlin made two tough steals, and Patrick Svitek grabbed five rebounds and blocked three shots. Vince LaFrancesca also had a solid effort.

Sonics 23, Gators 22 – Ben Mahony and Tucker Schmidt combined for 17 points as the Sonics trimmed the Gators. Mitchell Jolisky played well. For the Gators, John Fracker popped in 10 points.

Nighthawks 38, Celtics 24 – Jamey Tibbetts scored 12 points while Kyle O’Connor and Eric Thornberg tossed in eight apiece to lead the Nighthawks. Tom Capozziello and Austin Jones played well. For the Celtics, Tony Vacaro and Evan Kennedy combined for 16 points as Colby Summerlin and Ryan Pasko were strong on D.

Bullets 47, Wildcats 31 – Kevin O’Connell scored 14 points, Sam Kerr dished off 11 assists, Zach Bryan made eight steals and Greg Campbell grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Bullets. For the ‘Cats, Matt Baier scored eight points and Michael Herring grabbed six rebounds to lead the way. Max Brazo also scored five points and dished off four assists.

Knicks 26, Huskies 23 – Trevor Todd scored 14 points as the Knicks slipped past the Huskies. Chris Haylon and Yanni Koutmos had solid floor games. For the Huskies, Alex Martens popped in seven points.

Bullets 35, Knicks 16 – Matt Hamilton and Kevin O’Connell combined for 21 points to lift the Bullets to the win. Kyle Vignone and Brendan McNamara (10 steals) had solid performances. For the Knicks, Chris Haylon tossed in six points as Dan O’Connor, Nicholas Badiola and CJ Portolese played well.

Screaming Eagles 37, Lakers 14 – Robbie Phillips tossed in 16 points and Matt Datin grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles to the win. For the Lakers, Shane Wurtz popped in six points while John Wlasuk grabbed 11 rebounds and Tim Dalton made four steals. Ryan Korth added four points.

Nets 26, Sonics 23 – Dan Greenwood and Joe Fedak canned 10 points apiece as the Nets nipped the Sonics. Kevin Carney and Tim Mashur had fine floor games. For the Sonics, Ben Mahony tossed in nine points and Brian Reed added six. Tory Deakin dished off three assists.

 

The Suns burned the Shamrocks last weekend in the only game reported in the Intermediate Girls division. Here is what happened:

Suns 37, Shamrocks 17 – A strong defensive effort by the entire team led the Suns to victory. Hannah Basch-Gould canned 14 points while Taylor Benson and Katie Pessin popped in eight apiece to lead the offense. Katie McMorran and Marisa Cucco had solid floor games.

Globetrotters versus Cougars – Julia Trudell, Lisa Cody, Kelsey Packer and Jane Sclafani led the ‘Trotters as Lia Tassinari, Riley Wurtz, Bridget Power and Julie LaPerch powered the Cougars.

Celtics versus Knicks – Abbey Doski, Danielle Wandel, Claire Miles and Nicole Rothenhucher anchored the Celtics as Kirsten Lynch, Samantha Steimle, Morgan Hopper and Kristiana Engler played well for the Knicks.

Mustangs versus Hoopsters – Mary Kay Blawie, Emily Cannavo, Morgan Cutolo and Meredith Bridges had fine floor games for the Mustangs while Jessica Gibbons, Mary Hamula, Claure Maurer and Keri Chernoff played well for the Hoopsters.

Huskies versus Dalmations – Natalie Galante, Sarah Read, Meaghan Harkins, and Hanni Brumaghin had fine floor games for the Huskies while Meghan Condon, Kelly O’Sullivan, Katie Fossum and Caroline Kingsley played well for the Dalmations.
