‘I Can Cope’ At Danbury Hospital

DANBURY — The Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital and The American Cancer Society (ACS) announce the next series of classes in their co-sponsored cancer education program, I Can Cope.  This series of two, two-hour classes for people with cancer, their families and friends will be held on February 23 and March 1 from 1 to 3 pm in the Hospital’s Praxair Cancer Center conference room (first floor Stroock Building, Locust Avenue entrance).

 During this time, participants will learn about cancer diagnosis, treatment, side effects, nutrition, exercise, stress management, and more.  Classes are free, but registration is required and can be made by calling Cancer Care Coordinator Joanne Ballerini at  797-7771.

I Can Cope is a structured group education program of the American Cancer Society for adult cancer patients, and their family members and friends.  The course is conducted as a consecutive series addressing topics relevant to the cancer experience. Guest speakers include professionals in the field of cancer management, while videotapes, print materials, and class discussion provide up-to-date information for patients, family, and friends.

On February 23, Professor Lilla Dean, a registered nurse, will discuss “Learning About Cancer & Treatment Options.” Mary MacKrell, an oncology nurse, will address “Managing the Side Effects of Treatment.”

On March 1, Peggy Gilmore, a registered nurse and holistic practitioner in the Complementary Alternative Medicine department, will discuss “Techniques for Coping and Improving Health.” Joan Mills, oncology social worker, addresses “Relationships, Communication & Your Emotions.”

A panel of cancer survivors and community support service representatives will discuss “Discovering Resources & Celebrating Life.”

The Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital is dedicated to providing comprehensive cancer services efficiently and with compassion and concern for patient well-being.
