Four divisions of Newtown youth basketball - all sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department - wrapped up their respective seasons on Sunday afternoon at Newtown High School with a full day of all star games and award ceremonies.

Four divisions of Newtown youth basketball – all sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department – wrapped up their respective seasons on Sunday afternoon at Newtown High School with a full day of all star games and award ceremonies.

The Junior Girls, Intermediate Girls, Junior Boys and Intermediate Boys got onto the court one after another for about six hours of non-stop basketball. At the end of each game, the players then went to the cafeteria for the awards ceremonies – where the champions received their trophies and individual players were honored for their accomplishments during the 2000-01 season.

Starting up at the top (follow the numbers):

Photo #1 – The Yellow Submarines earned the Junior Girls divisional championship with a 27-15 win over the Nitro. Their team (in no particular order) consisted of Brianne Bowen, Kelli Datin, Lindsay Coyle, Bridget Coughlin, Diana Grimaldi, Megan Rawson, Christina Wolf, Jenna Zigman, and Karli Bietel.

Photo #2 – The Jazz captured the Intermediate Girls divisional championship with a 23-11 win over the Thunderbolts. Front row, from left, are Joanna Barry, Kristen Gucciardo, Colleen Murphy, Kelly Manuel and Jennifer Mariani. Photo #3 – In the Junior Girls division, Rebecca Narel (left) was named Most Valuable Player while Jackie Gutbrod received the Bill Bower Sportsmanship Award.

Photo #4 – In the Intermediate Girls division, Moira Collier (left) was named Most Valuable Player while Valerie Nezvesky won the Joan Crick Sportsmanship Award.

Photo #5 – In the Junior Boys division, Chris Martin (left) won the Phil Skalandunas Sportsmanship Award while Garrett Hahn took home the Most Valuable Player award.

Photo #6 – The Heat claimed the Junior Boys divisional championship with a 36-30 win over the Knicks. Front row, from left, are Stephen Mucci, Kyle Ekstrom and James Wilkins. Biddy Basketball

Any player who did not make the last clinic can pick up their participation medal at the Parks and Recreation Department.

Board Meeting

There will be a Newtown Youth Basketball Board meeting on Monday, April 2, at 7:30 pm, in Room A7 of the Newtown Middle School.

The meeting will focus on the election of board members for the 2001-02 season.

Anyone interested in serving on the board, please attend or call June Gallucci at 270-9476. All positions are open.
