*707 On Main, Monroeâs new restaurant on Route 25, will feature the musicians MORGAN EVE SWAIN and SPENCER SWAIN for a unique blend of Celtic fiddling and guitar on Thursday, November 8, from 8 to 11 pm. The restaurant has been featuring music regularly every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening (although last weekâs big feature was a Wednesday evening performance by the Newtown resident and international entertainer BILLY FELLOWS, who offered a special fundraiser for Newtownâs Fraser-Woods Montessori School).
Morgan Eve, age 16, became interested in Celtic fiddling from spending summers in Prince Edward island and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where traditional Celtic fiddling has sparked a new wave of interest among young musicians. She has studied with renowned Canadian fiddlers and she recently placed third during her first fiddling competition, at the New Hampshire Highland Games. She also won Best Strathespey, a traditional dance fiddle style.
Spencer, 20, recently transferred from SUNY/Purchase College Conservatroy of Music (where he studied classical violin and studio competition) to University of Rhode Island to study in its liberal arts curriculum. On weekends he plays original violin and guitar music at a gourmet ice cream café in Newport, and recently joined a reggae/rock bnad, Zox, as its violinist.
*KING CRIMSON with JOHN PAUL JONES will be at The Palace Theater in New Haven on Sunday, December 9, at 7:30 pm. All tickets are $35 and are on sale now. Call 800-477-6849, visit tickets.com online or visit any of its in-person vendors, or visit the Palaceâs box office.
*DAVID LEWIS, the British singer-songwriter whose 1996 debut CD No Straight Line earned reviews describing it as âarrestingâ and âbeautifulâ (and is already out of print), will be appearing at New Havenâs Tune Inn on November 23 as the opening act for his friend, JOHN WESLEY HARDING. Lewis is touring to support the upcoming release of For Now, due out November 13. The new album was co-produced by Lewisâ former Cambridge University classmate and sometime co-writer Harding, who has his own cache of well-received solo albums and an international reputation for witty, penetrating songs. Harding continues to tour in support of his latest release, The Confessions of St Ace.
Tickets for the Tune Inn show are $10, and this is a 21-and-over event. Doors open at 7, and showtime is 7:30. The club, at 29 Center Street in New Haven, can be contacted by calling 203-497-9831.
*Originally scheduled for October 12, the BEN ALLISON & MEDICINE WHEEL at Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield has been rescheduled for November 30. The 8 pm show will feature a man named by Downbeat magazine as âone of the 25 rising stars for the future.â Tickets are $30 each and include not only the show but also a pre-concert wine tasting. Allison is a New Haven native and has already written over 100 works for ensembles ranging from duos to 17-piece jazz orchestras as the director and composer-in-residence of Jazz Composers Collective, a musician-run, non-profit organization based in New York City created by Allison when he was 25. The collectiveâs mission is to eb an open and creative forum for artists. For tickets and additional information the museum can be contacted by calling 203-438-4519. Tickets purchased for the October 12 show will of course be honored.
Until next week, Iâll be seeing you⦠on the road.
