Knowing And Trusting Neighbors In Newtown

By Eliza Hallabeck

Roughly 130 respondents to The Newtown Bee’s informal survey, “How well do you know/trust your neighbor?” last week had mixed responses.

The survey was posted online between Wednesday, July 7, and Wednesday, July 14, and asked residents questions like, “In what situations are you more likely to trust your neighbors?,” “Do you feel safe in your neighborhood?,” and “Would/does having close relationships with your neighbors impact your sense of home?”

First Selectman Pat Llodra was one of the online responders to participate in the survey, and said on Wednesday, July 14, that she does feel at home thanks in part to the relationships she has in her neighborhood, one set of neighbors have lived next to the Llodras for roughly 40 years.

Her neighbors are there for her, she said, “I know they are, and I am there for them.”

Newtown is a community of smaller neighborhood communities, she said, and, while some may have a different make-up, people do identify with where they live in town when having discussions with her.

Full results from the survey are available online at www.newtownbee.com.

A new survey is also available asking residents, “How well do you sleep?” Questions were put together with the assistance of Griffin Hosptial’s Sleep Wellness Center, Derby, a fully accredited  sleep center with the American Academy of Sleep. Results from the survey will be checked by Dr K. Marya Chaisson, director of Griffin’s Sleep Wellness Center for next week’s edition of The Newtown Bee to help assess how well Newtown sleeps overall.
