The three-pointers were not exactly raining out of the sky like they were in the opening week of the 2005 season, but Kurt Nacewicz canned a couple of treys and scored 19 points to lead Syracuse to a 56-45 win over North Carolina in Rising Stars Summer Basketball League action on Tuesday night at Treadwell Park.
Nacewicz scored seven points in the first half as the Orangemen built up a narrow 22-19 lead over the Tarheels at the break, but then Nacewicz exploded for 12 points in the second half as the Orangemen pulled away.
Jason Kostecki scored 10 points and Josh Engler added nine for the Orangemen. Ishan Tatake and Jeff DiNicola popped in six points apiece. For the âHeels, Andy Lapple (with a pair of three-pointers) and Trevor Todd scored eight points apiece.
In the other game, Xhulio Halili scored 13 points (shooting 4-of-4 from the foul line) to lead Duke to a 41-29 win over UCLA. Steve Musco added 12 points while Kelly Ann Brophy and Austin Jones contributed four points apiece.
For the Bruins, Jordyn Good, Ed White and Brendan Blawie popped in eight points apiece while Mike Herring and Alex Grant combined for five more.
Last Thursday, George Zaruba canned 19 points as UConn pounded Syracuse, 70-41. John Aminti popped in 15 points and Max Paynter added 14 while Dan Clement and Ben Miles contributed nine points apiece. For the Orangemen, Adam Schankman canned 15 points (11 of those in the second half) and John Engler added 13 while Grant Braun chipped in eight.
In the other game of the night, Steve Musco poured in 25 points â 15 of those in the second half â and Joe Cappiello added 13 more Duke rallied back from a narrow halftime deficit to defeat North Carolina, 58-51. Xhulio Halili and Brendan OâConnell chipped in with six points apiece. For UNC, double-digit efforts by Any Lapple (17), Ryan Goodridge (11) and Christian Steimle (10) went for naught.
On Thursday, Duke was slated to meet UConn while UCLA was slated to meet Syracuse. Next Tuesday, it will be Syracuse versus UConn and Duke versus UCLA and next Thursday it will be Duke versus Syracuse and UCLA versus North Carolina.
