The action in the newly-formed South-West Conference really heated up this past week and even though the Newtown High School girlsâ lacrosse team did win two out of three games, the win it wanted the most was the one it didnât get.
Now, if that sounds EXACTLY like what happened to the Newtown High School boysâ lacrosse team (see related story), thatâs because it is. Like the boys â who beat New Milford and Immaculate, but lost to arch-rival New Fairfield â the girls came up with wins over Joel Barlow and Masuk, but fell a second time to a surprisingly-strong New Milford team.
Just a couple weeks ago, the Nighthawks suffered a 13-9 loss to the Green Wave down in New Milford because, in large part, they had trouble slowing down Sandy Schmidt. Well, the story didnât change all that much last Friday as Schmidt scored five more goals and led New Milford to an 11-9 win over Newtown.
And like last time, it was a second-half explosion (eight goals in this last case) that led to the victory. It helped the Green Wave overcome a nifty six-goal performance by Newtownâs senior co-captain Erin McDonald.
Jen Chuddy, Morgan Pacheco and Mary Bell also scored for the Nighthawks.
The loss to New Milford, though, was sandwiched by victories over Joel Barlow (13-6) last Thursday and Masuk (10-5), a vastly-improved team, on Tuesday night over in Monroe.
Against Barlow, McDonald put the âHawks ahead early, 1-0, but the Falcons scored back-to-back goals to put the âHawks in a surprising, 2-1 hole.
But McDonald barreled her way through the Barlow defense for one goal, Ellie Champagne took advantage of a stick penalty for another goal, and Mary Bell converted a nice pass from McDonald for another goal and just like that the âHawks were ahead, 4-2. Then McDonald (from Angela Shannon, a nice pass from behind the cage) scored again and Champagne came back twice in a row to put the âHawks comfortably on top, 7-2.
The Falcons did score the final two goals of the first half, however, to trim the Newtown lead to 7-4.
But just seconds into the second half, Meg Johnson dropped a nice pass off to McDonald for a very quick goal and an 8-4 Newtown lead. Even though the Falcons scored two more goals during the half, Champagne was all but unstoppable, scoring three more times to give her six goals for the game.
Kate Capito and Bell added goals at the tail end of the second half to lead the âHawks to the 13-6 final.
Then on Tuesday night, McDonald scored three goals and assisted in three others as the âHawks defeated Masuk for a second time. Ellie Champagne, Kelly Shpunt, and Morgan Pacheco scored two goals apiece and Megan Johnson added one.
Diana McNamara made 15 saves.
The two wins and one loss put the âHawks at 7-6 overall, 6-2 in the SWC. The âHawks hosted New Fairfield on Thursday (after press time) and will host Joel Barlow on Monday (both games starting at 3:45 pm).
The regular season will conclude against Ridgefield, at home, next Thursday. The SWC playoffs will get underway on Tuesday, May 29, with the Nighthawks expected to host a semi-final game.
