Residents Urge Protections For Sanford Road
BY STEVE BIGHAM
Several members of the public attended Monday's meeting of the Board of
Selectmen to voice support for a scenic road application for Sanford Road, but
one other agenda item also piqued their interest.
Also on hand at the meeting were developers Larry Edwards and Thomas Maguire,
who brought forth their fourth proposal to build the Tamarack Woods
subdivision, which would be located in between Echo Valley, Sanford and
Tamarack roads.
Two of those proposals were rejected by the Planning & Zoning Commission, the
third was withdrawn. All three were strongly opposed by residents of the area.
Protections afforded to country roads under provisions of the town's scenic
road ordinance limit major road alterations or improvements, such as widening
of a right-of-way, paving, grade changes, straightening and the removal of
stone walls and mature trees.
According to Mr Maguire and Mr Edwards, however, this most recent Tamarack
Woods plan would have less impact on the neighborhood than the previous
proposals and would, hopefully, not require any road improvements to Sanford
or Tamarack roads. Mr Edwards said the eight lots (on 33 acres) would front
Sanford and Tamarack roads, with 13 acres deeded for open space. Because a
cul-de-sac would not be built (unlike other plans), no work to the existing
road would be required.
The Board of Selectman voted to send a letter to the Planning & Zoning
Commission advising that the selectmen do not require either a road or
drainage work agreement for the developers' current proposal for Tamarack
Woods.
