Woman’s Club Art Show Yields Many Winners

The annual Arts and Crafts Show of the Newtown Woman’s Club was held Thursday, March 16 at The Fireside Inn in Newtown. Out of a field of 59 entries in 13 categories, 26 first place winners were selected. Co-chairpersons for the local event, Mary Elander and Ellen Baff, were pleased by the number and quality of the entries at Thursday’s show.

Following judging and a luncheon, overall best in show was awarded to theorem painting artist Florence Caron.

First place winners at the March 16 show were:

Color photography, Coke Cramer for “A Very Happy Nine Year Old At Christmas;” Natural History photography, Virginia Chiaramonte for “Red Leaves;” Scenic photography, Coke Cramer for “Somesville, Maine”; Feature photography, Coke Cramer for “Next Day After Blizzard of 2006.”

Original art acrylics, Virginia Chiaramonte for “Floral, Mixed Flowers in Vase;” Watercolor, Lynn Randall Buttner for “Two Trees Standing Tall In A Meadow;” Oils, Evelyn Spera for “Magnolia Time;” Pastels, Marcia Cavanaugh for “Clay Pot.”

Sewing accessories, Peg Forbell for book bag “I Love Books!” Wall hanging, machine quilted, Peg Forbell for “Old Glory;” Patchwork machine, Ruth Campbell, quilt; Smocking, Lilleba Peterson for pillow; Appliqué, Lilleba Peterson.

Needlework embroidery, Sue Lehmann; Knitting accessories, adult apparel, Peg Forbell; adult apparel, sweater, Marilyn Alexander; children’s apparel, sweater, Marion Thompson; toys, doll robe, Betty Warner.

The first place winners will continue on to judging at the District level at the Spinning Wheel Restaurant in Redding on March 30.

According to Peg Forbell, district and state arts and craft chairperson, first place winners from each of those 7 districts will then progress to state. National competition is held only in the photography division.
