Branford Man

Branford police notified Newtown police about 10 pm June 16 that they had custody of Carl P. Kaiser, III, of Branford, whom Newtown police wanted on an arrest warrant.

Newtown police then traveled to Branford where they picked up Kaiser and brought him back to Newtown. Newtown police charged Kaiser with second-degree failure to appear in court, operating a motor vehicle while under suspension, and failure to display marker plates. The charges stem from past incidents.

Kaiser was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court June 19 to answer the charges.

I-84 Incident

State police report an incident on Interstate-84 early on the morning of June 14.

State police said motorist James R. Calabrese, 27, of Danbury was driving a 1995 Honda Civic on westbound I-84 in the right lane of three lanes almost a mile east of Exit 8 about 12:15 am when, as the right lane ended at the top of a hill, Calabrese attempted to merge to the left.

But motorist Thomas Baldwin, 48, of New Fairfield, who was driving a 1997 Jeep Cherokee in the center lane to which Calabrese was trying to merge, would not allow Calabrese to merge left by keeping the Jeep traveling closely behind another westbound vehicle in the center lane, state police said.

Baldwin in the Jeep eventually allowed Calabrese in the Honda to merge in front of the Jeep, state police said.

Calabrese then suddenly stopped the Honda, got out of the car and yelled at Baldwin in the Jeep saying that Baldwin was following him too closely, according to state police.

At some point during the incident, there was a collision between the two vehicles, but due to conflicting stories it is unclear who struck whom, state police said. There were no injuries.

State police said Calabrese made a reckless use of the highway by a pedestrian. State police said Baldwin was following too closely.

Two Trucks Collide

State police report that two trucks collided about 7:45 am June 15 on westbound Interstate-84 about one-half mile east of Exit 10.

State police said trucker Joel Wilson, 32, of North Attleborough, Mass., who was driving a Mitsubishi truck, fell asleep and struck the rear end of an International truck driven by Michael McKenney, 39, of Mansfield, Mass.

State police said Wilson received leg and hand cuts but refused medical treatment. Wilson was following too closely, state police said.

DWI Warrant

Police report that David Delaney, 34, of Stratford turned himself in June 19 after learning police had a warrant for his arrest in connection with an April 11 accident on Swamp Road in Botsford.

Police charged Delaney with driving while intoxicated and evading responsibility in connection with the crash.

Police said that on April 11 about 2 pm Delaney was driving eastbound on Swamp Road and looked down onto the floor of his 1996 Honda Civic to pick up an object, after which he struck two mailboxes and a utility pole. Delaney was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment after the accident, police said.

After processing the arrest, police released Delaney on a promise to appear July 6 in Danbury Superior Court.

I-84 Rollover

State police said Karen L. Stage, 39, of Van Buren, Indiana, was driving a 1996 Ford F-150 pickup truck hauling a camper on a wet, slippery eastbound Interstate-84 near the Boulevard Extension about 11 am June 15 when she attempted to pass a “wide load” vehicle, but lost control of the camper, causing the pickup and camper to skid sideways, roll over, and strike an embankment and trees on the highway median.

The crash caused eastbound traffic delays. Stage refused treatment for a bump on the head, state police said. State police said she was traveling too fast for conditions.

Riverside Road

Police said they stopped motorist Mark J. Skura, 25, of 24 Cherry Street, Sandy Hook, June 19 for allegedly driving 45 miles per hour in a 25-mph zone on Riverside Road. Police said they charged Skura with traveling too fast and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension.

Skura is scheduled to appear July 5 in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.
