Local Poets Celebrate Poetry Month
At C.H. Booth Library
Celebrate Poetry Month at the C.H. Booth Library with readings by two local poets, Doris Henderson and Alan Holder, Sunday, April 17, at 2 pm, in the Antiques Room of the library.Â
Ms Henderson has long been associated with the Connecticut Poetry Society. She facilitates a monthly writing workshop at the Danbury Library, where new members are always welcome. Ms Henderson is the author of three chapbooks and a recent full-length collection, What Gets Lost.
Her poem âDistancesâ was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her poems have been described as âwitty, precise, accessible,â and as having a âdreamlike, almost surreal quality, with an amazing cast of characters.â What Gets Lost has a variety of poems, both light and serious, on childhood experience, separations, lifeâs challenges, the vagaries of love. Ms Henderson is known for a wry humor that animates her work.
Mr Holder has given several readings of his work in New York and Connecticut. He leads a monthly discussion of poetry at the Ridgefield Public Library. During the course of his long academic career, Mr Holder came to specialize in the teaching of poetry, ranging from Beowulf to Allen Ginsburg. In his retirement he now concentrates on the writing of poetry, informed by the loss and sense of aging.
He has written two chapbooks, Opened: A Mourning Sequence, 2008, and in 2010, Aging Head in the Clouds.
Light refreshments, a book signing, and a chance to visit with the poets will follow the readings. Copies of both poetsâ latest works will be available for purchase.
