The Career Center At Newtown High School Lists Scholarships
The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.
The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.
If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.
CHSCA Scholar Athlete Scholarships â Six scholarships of $1,000 from the Connecticut High School Coaches Association will be awarded to three male and three female graduating high school seniors. Seniors are eligible to apply if they have earned at least one varsity athletic letter, have achieved a minimum 3.0 academic average and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship and leadership. Each CIAC-member school many nominate one boy and one girl to participate in the final selection process for the scholarship awards. All applicants must return a completed Scholar-Athlete Nomination Form (available in the Career Center) to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by January 2.
Weller Education Scholarship â The purpose of this $4,000 (paid in equal installments of $1,000 per academic year) local scholarship is to recognize and financially assist a high school senior planning to pursue a career in public or private elementary or secondary schools. An essay of 500â700 words on âWhy I Have Chosen a Career in Educationâ is part of the application. The essay must focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the applicantâs secondary educational experiences and include specific examples and anecdotes with suggestions for change. All applications must be submitted to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by February 12.
Weller-Vincent Voccia Vocational Award â The Weller Foundation supports local students planning a career in the skilled trades. High school seniors who are full-time students from Newtown, Joel Barlow, Masuk, Shelton, or Trumbull High Schools may be considered. Each participating school will be eligible for one recipient to receive a scholarship equal to the lesser of $2,500 or 50 percent cost of tuition or fees of the vocational technical program proposed. Examples of programs are auto/truck maintenance, aircraft maintenance, air conditioning, culinary arts, machine design (CAD), carpentry, barbering/hairdressing, photography, and secretarial. The applicant shall demonstrate interest and talent in his/her chosen field. All applications must be submitted to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by March 12.
Weller Medical/Health Sciences Scholarship â The Weller Foundation provides financial assistance to a local high school senior who has chosen a course of study in the field of medical/health sciences. The scholarship award totals $6,000 or 50 percent of the cost of tuition for the training program, whichever is less. Health care careers acceptable under this program are nursing, therapy, medical technology, paramedics, and other licensed health care workers who provide one-on-one care to people. Programs leading to MD or PhD degrees are not acceptable. Academic programs may be a minimum of one year and a maximum of six years. Qualified applicants must be full-time students from Newtown, Masuk, Joel Barlow, Shelton, or Trumbull High Schools. All applications must be submitted to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by February 12.
Sam Walton Community Scholarships â Up to two $1,000 nonrenewable scholarships will be awarded from every Wal-Mart and Samâs Club store to graduating seniors. Eligible students must be a graduating high school senior and may not be a Wal-Mart or Samâs Club employee or child of an employee. Applicants should have high academic achievement, community involvement, and demonstrate financial need. The online application process must be completed by January 12. Applications are available at walmartfoundation.org.
CASIA Scholarship â The Connecticut Alarm & Systems Integrators Association will award one $1,000 scholarship and one for $500 to qualified graduating seniors from Connecticut. The first place winner will qualify for national awards. Eligible students must have a father, mother, or natural guardian who is a full-time employee of the Connecticut Police or fire communities (volunteers included). Students who are volunteers themselves, but not the child of a firefighter, are not eligible. The application package is due by February 26.
Edward J. Nell Memorial Scholarships in Journalism â High school seniors who have recently published in their school newspaper or a professional newspaper are eligible to apply for one $1,500 award or one of eight $500 awards offered by the Quill and Scroll Society, an international honorary society for high school journalists. Seniors who are winners in the organizationâs writing and photo contests are eligible to apply for these scholarships. The scholarship may be used at any college or university that offers a major in journalism. The contest portion consists of 12 divisions, including news stories, in-depth reports, sports coverage, and editorial cartoons. Complete information is available at uiowa.edu. The contest portion closes in early February. Seniors may go on to apply for the scholarship by May 10.
