IAIS Will Host âMeet The Artistâ Event
WASHINGTON â Artist Mag-la-Que, of Yankton Sioux descent, is noted for his hand crafted traditional Plains Indian style chokers, breast plates, belts and bracelets. They are made primarily of bone or buffalo horn with glass crow beads and genuine leather.
Many of his necklaces are made with semiprecious stones, such as turquoise, amethyst, garnet and jasper as well as gold and silver beads. Mag-la-Que also makes fringed leather âpossible bagsâ used by both men and women. Known as possible bags because they were meant to carry an assortment of items, each bag is painstakingly created by hand in the traditional ways of his people.
âSun Spirits,â an exhibition featuring the work of Mag-la-Que, is on view in The Artistâs Corner within the museum gift shop at The Institute for American Indian Studies until April 30. The shop and the exhibition are free; access to the full museum is by an admission fee.
A Meet The Artist event will be Saturday, April 23, from 2 to 4 pm.
IAIS is at 38 Curtis Road, off Route 199. Call 860-868-0518 or visit birdstone.org for additional information.
