Town GOP Caucus To Consider A Slate Of Candidates
While Newtown Democrats are scheduled to reveal their partyâs recommendations following a final nominating committee meeting Thursday, July 14, town Republicans announced their recommendations, and named the candidates who would be put forward for full party endorsement at that partyâs upcoming caucus.
Newtown Republicans plan to caucus on Monday, July 25, at 7:30 pm in the Newtown Senior Center Meeting Room to endorse those candidates for the local election on November 8. At the caucus, the Newtown Republican Town Committee (RTC) will present a slate. Any registered Republican may then nominate candidates from the floor.
âThe town committee retains the privilege of making the first nomination for each office, but it is the caucus who officially endorses candidates,â said Carol Recht, RTC chairman.
The town committee has not come up with a candidate to challenge incumbent Democratic First Selectman Herb Rosenthal.
While many incumbents are running for reelection, she said the RTC was pleased that several newcomers had also come forward. Following the caucus, endorsed candidates are invited to meet briefly with RTC members to plan campaign strategy.
Heading the ticket is incumbent William A. Brimmer, Jr, who is running for his fourth term as Selectman. Long-term Town Clerk Cindy Simon is running for another two-year term. Incumbents Joseph Kearney, John Kortze, and Harrison Waterbury are running for their seats on the Board of Finance.
The RTC is recommending incumbent Elaine McClure for a third four-year term on the Board of Education. Joseph DiCandido, Michael Iassogna, and Richard Recht are incumbents seeking reelection for the Legislative Counsel in District 1.
Joseph Borst, incumbent in District 2, plans to run for another term. The RTC is also recommending longtime party member Barbara Bloom for District 2, as well as Newtown High School Interim Principal Patricia Llodra and newcomer Stacie Doyle.
In District 3, incumbents David Brown and Will Rodgers plan to run again. Jeff Capeci, an RTC member since January 2004, will run for a third Republican seat.
Planning and Zoning Commission incumbent Barbara Jane Brymer plans to run for another four-year term, while Robert Mulholland will run for another two-year term as alternate.
Barbara OâConnor plans to run for her seat on the Zoning Board of Appeals as do incumbent alternates Timothy Cronin and Laurie Wrabel.
Carol Mattegat will once again run for Police Commission. Newcomer Marianne Brown is a candidate for the Board of Assessment Appeals. Sandra Motyka and Kathy Madzula will run again for six-year terms on the Town Hall Board of Managers.
âThe caucus is a wonderful way to participate in the political process, and we hope as many Republicans as possible will attend,â said Ms Recht.
