The Newtown High School band continues to march along, picking up more and
more hardware as it goes.
Last week, the Indians capped a successful campaign by capturing the Grand
Champion Award for best overall band at the Fiesta-Val Invitational in
Williamsburg, Virginia.
"I was really proud of the kids, not only in how they performed on stage, but
how they conducted themselves off the stage, as well," noted director Jack
Zamary.
Mr Zamary's musicians copped the invitational's top prize after receiving high
marks for their standout concert, jazz and marching performances.
Competing against 12 other schools from Connecticut, New York, Ohio,
Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia, the NHS marching band
finished first overall. As part of that award, the band's percussion was
honored for its standout display.
The school's jazz ensemble also received first-place recognition behind the
award-winning performances of the reed (saxophone) and rhythm sections. In
fact, Mark Obolewicz was named best alto saxophone soloist.
In the concert competition, individual awards were awarded to Megan Costa
(piccolo), Martine Shanchuk (clarinet) and Dan Beers (bassoon).
Competing in some of the most competitive divisions, both the NHS concert and
symphonic bands took home second-place prizes.
The band stayed in Virginia Beach, some 50 minutes away from the competition.
