Michael Terry of Weston broke 78 out of 100 clay pigeons to win the American Trapshooting Association competition last weekend in Newtown. The competition was sponsored by the Newtown Fish and Game Club.

Area students, from ages 10 to 15, fielded a team to compete in the first registered trapshooting tournament of the year. Terry edged out Mat Apgar of Fairfield by one target. Runners-up include CJ Ehrentraut of Beacon Falls, Kyle Matthews of Monroe and Stephen Michael Apgar of Middlebury.

The American Trapshooting Association competition is held annually in Newtown on Mother’s Day weekend.

The team is among more than 7,000 elementary and high school students across the country who shoot in the Scholastic Clay Target Program organized by the Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation.

The team will be shooting in state championships in Hartford in June.
