Washbrook Road Residents Press For "Scenic Rd" Status

BY STEVE BIGHAM

Several residents of Washbrook Road showed up at a public hearing Wednesday

night to tell the Legislative Council why they think their road deserves

"scenic road" status.

Many residents of Botsford Road said they cheered when they heard of the

council's interest in doing its part to maintain Newtown's rustic roads.

Eighty percent of those living on Washbrook Road signed the petition, seeking

the scenic-road designation.

Don Hammalian of Washbrook Road called the passage of the scenic-road

ordinance "one of the most progressive moves made in town in a long time."

"Washbrook Road is a last vestige," he said. "There are foundations on the

road that date back to the 18th century."

As Bob Wade of 34 Washbrook Road pointed out, there is a lot of talk these

days about how Newtown is losing its rural character. "This is one road that

definitely has a lot to do with the rural character of Newtown," he said.

Isabelle Sodoski of 19 Washbrook Road said her dirt road meets all the

requirements for scenic-road status, including stone walls, water, old trees

and lots of horses and pedestrians.

"A lot of us would like to keep it that way," she said.

If paved, residents fear Washbrook Road will become a shortcut for speeders

between Cold Spring Road and Meadowbrook Road.

Protection afforded to country roads under provisions of the town's

scenic-road ordinance limit major road alterations or improvements, such as

widening of right-of-ways, paving, grade changes, straightening, and the

removal of stone walls and mature trees. The scenic road ordinance was passed

this past June.

Sanford Road is the town's only scenic road. It received council approval late

last year. Washbrook Road is part of the bridle path for Meadowbrook Farms.

A second hearing to discuss a scenic-road request for New Lebbon Road was also

scheduled for Wednesday night. However, no residents showed up. Both hearings

were continued until March 4.
