Ambulance Corps Had A Record Year
(with photo)
The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to 1,238 calls in 1996,
breaking all previous records for responses.
Of those calls, the corps reports, 234 were due to auto accidents, 266 were
from non-vehicular trauma, 646 were for medical calls and the rest were a
combination of emotional problems or standby calls. Danbury Hospital was the
destination for 855 calls, while the rest went to St. Vincent Hospital in
Bridgeport, Waterbury Hospital, Yale New Haven and Griffin Hospital in Derby.
In 1995, the ambulance corps responded to 1,170 calls.
According to corps chief Steve Rambone, the building boom in town has caused
an increase in the number of times the ambulance rolls out on calls for help.
Covering the over-60-square mile town, the ambulance corps consists of 44
volunteers, just a few more than 20 years ago when the ambulance responded to
approximately 500 calls per year.
The top responders to calls this past year were Debbie Aubin (317 calls), John
Basso (299), Danielle Borges (220), Maria Saidlier (213) and Bob Carroll
(156).
Mr Rambone said the corps is always looking for new members, who must be 21 or
older. No experience is required as the corps will provide all the training.
Anyone interested in joining can call the town dispatch office at 270-4200 and
leave a message for Steve Rambone.
