Food Drive A Success
Food Drive A Success
To the Editor:
The Newtown Post Office held its annual food drive on Saturday, May 12, spearheaded by postal worker Rob Frangione. The food drive benefits the Salvation Army Food Pantry located and run by the Newtown Social Services Department at 3 Main Street in Newtown.
I would like to thank all the generous residents of Newtown who donated an overwhelming amount of food to the drive. We filled 160 recycling bins with non-perishable items and packed a large box truck to the brim. I would also like to thank the 50 volunteers from Boy Scouts troops 70, 270 and 370, and Lin Hertbergâs group of girls from Project Aspire and Ed Reese who worked tirelessly throughout the day in 90 degree heat sorting and loading the food. The kids had boundless energy and enthusiasm â it was truly a heartwarming experience and a day to remember.
I would also like to give a special thanks to the Newtown Highway Department who cheerfully unloaded all the food in our office. Also to George Birch, a Highway Department employee on call Saturday, who I had to ask to bring more recycling binds three times during the course of the day. Even though he had family plans that day, he accommodated us with a smile.
We are truly fortunate to live in such a generous community and I would like to once again thank everyone involved in the food drive on behalf of the many families who utilize our pantry.
Very sincerely,
Glynis Lanzetta
