Newtown Continuing Education has released its fall 2003 brochure. This year there are more than 60 course offerings: Spend Halloween in Salem, see the City Lights of Manhattan, build your voice by singing with “A Song In Our Hearts,” get your finances in order with one of our financial courses…and for those of you who prefer to stay at home and learn, web-based classes are also available.

Sept. 24 Parent Connection Forum Set

Prepare, Prevent and Protect!

Parent Connection, a recently reformed Newtown-based parent group dedicated to promoting substance abuse awareness, will conduct its first forum Wednesday, September 24, from 7 to 9 pm in the Newtown Middle School auditorium.

Facilitating the discussion is nationally renowned substance abuse expert John Hamilton, LMFT, LADC. The forum will cover recent trends in substance abuse and suggest ways for the community to respond to keep children safe from the threats of substance abuse.

Cleanup Planned At Orchard Hill

The Newtown Lions Club is organizing a cleanup project on Saturday, September 27, from 9 am to 1 pm at Orchard Hill Nature Center and calling on residents and organizations to help.

The Lions plan to do more marking of paths, lining paths with wood chips, removing dead trees, and general cleanup.

Anyone who can help is asked to show up that day. For more information call Gordon Williams at 426-6443.

Friendly Visitor Seeks Volunteers

The Friendly Visitor Program, sponsored by The Volunteer Center Serving Western Connecticut, will be holding Friendly Visitor training for individuals interested in becoming a friend to a homebound senior citizen.

The training is 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Thursday, October 16; Tuesday, October 21; and Thursday, October 23, at St Rose of Lima Parish Center, 42 Church Hill Road, Newtown. Attendance at all three sessions is required.

No experience is necessary. Volunteers of all ages are welcome. There are many elderly people in the greater Danbury/New Milford area waiting to be matched.

September 24

Blood Pressure Screenings

Free blood pressure screenings will be held in Newtown on Wednesday, September 24.

The Ashlar of Newtown Nursing Department will sponsor a blood pressure screening from 10 am to noon at the Cyrenius H. Booth Library on Main Street. A registered nurse will conduct the screening.

The Connecticut Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) will hold a blood pressure screening at Nunnawauk Meadows on Nunnawauk Road from 11 am to noon.

The public is invited to both free screenings.
