Newtown High School’s wrestling team defeated host New Milford 42-18 on January 21. This was a battle of the top two teams in last year’s South-West Conference championships, won by the Green Wave in a nail-biter. In this matchup, the Nighthawks made sure there was little suspense, winning ten of 14 matches, although it wasn’t so easy. Newtown won only two matches via pinfall, and the Wave won the first two bouts of the nights for an early 9-0 lead before the Hawks reeled off nine victories in succession.

In the 106 pound weight division, Tom Leuci earned a 7-5 decision over Colin Linder. At 113, Luca Crudo defeated Mel Ortiz in a 4-0 decision. At 126, Ed Lovely beat C.J. Schultz via major decision, 9-1. In the 152 division, Joe Accousti pinned Louis Pates in 26 seconds. At 160, Connor LeMay earned a 13-7 decision over John Ceconi. At 170, Anthony Falbo beat George Cury (stall out). At 182, Logan Walsh won a 10-2 major decision over Turner Ellis. In the 195 class, Andy Hubina claimed a 5-0 decision over Denzel Phillips. At 220, Tom Long picked up a 13-2 major decision triumph over Derek Laurentus. At 285, Stephen Grasso pinne Jomar Orejuela in 3:19.
