Softball Team Splits First Four Games
Newtown High School’s softball team won its first two games of the campaign, then dropped a pair of contests to carry a 2-2 record into Thursday’s scheduled clash with visiting Weston.
The Nighthawks began the campaign with a pair of victories over FCIAC teams on their home field, topping Trumbull 5-2 on April 9, then defeating Danbury 12-5 the next day.
In the win over Trumbull, pitcher Lauren Wilcox struck out nine batters and walked three. Kate Laaksonen smacked a two-run double, Mali Klorczyk had a run-scoring double, and Kayla O’Grady and Abi Kuligowski both knocked in runs. Freshmen Megan Goyda and Jill Lasorsa both had their first high school hits in the victory.
Against Danbury, Newtown compiled 20 hits in support of pitcher Gillian Galante. Laaksonen was 3-for-4 with a double, a homerun, and four runs batted in, and Dani Shine had a double, homer, and three RBI.

Newtown had its hot bats cooled off in a 12-0 loss at FCIAC opponent St Joseph of Trumbull on April 12. Lasorsa had Newtown’s lone hit in the defeat. The Hawks were then blanked by Oxford, 4-0, at home on April 14. O’Grady had the only Newtown hit in the loss.
The Nighthawks are scheduled to face Oxford again, in the first game that counts in the South-West Conference standings, a 4:15 road contest on Monday, April 21. They’ll return home to take on Joel Barlow of Redding at 3:45 pm on Wednesday, April 23.
Through the first four games, O’Grady leads the team in hits with five, and is batting .455; Ryan leads the team with five runs scored, Woznick and Laaksonen both have four hits, and Laaksonen has a team-best six runs batted in.
