It brings to mind the epic battle between Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards and it was just as exciting.

Justin DeVellis of the Raptors poured in 33 points in an Intermediate Boys Sixth Grade Division game but was overshadowed – just a bit – by Michael Scharfenberg of the Nighthawks, who canned 35 points to lead the Hawks to a thrilling 54-49 win last weekend.

There were lots of other top flight performances on the hardwood … and here they are –

TRAVEL

Boys 6th

Monroe 54, Newtown 42 – Newtown battled Monroe in a non-league match-up but came up a bit short. Conner Quinn scored 10 points, David Gerics added nine and Kevin LeBlanc tossed in eight to spark Newtown.

Newtown 53, Wilton 29 – Gavin Scallon poured in 13 while Christian Barrett and Nick Gerbo combined for 15 more as Newtown concluded the regular season at 17-9 overall, 10-1 in the league.

Girls 5th

Newtown 13, Redding 10 – Mary Joe Rossi and Kerry Scallon had three points apiece to lead Newtown to the win. Danielle Shine, Jaclyn Daily and Carley Ferris all had two points and Jenny Indelicato scored with a free throw.

Fairfield 16, Newtown 12 – Danielle Shine led all scorers with five points, but it wasn’t enough to lift Newtown to the win. Mary Joe Rossi, Jessie Principi and Carley Ferris tossed in two points each. Rebecca Grant had a great drive, got fouled and dropped in a free throw. Everyone played hard and had several steals against this very tough team.

Senior Girls

Redhawks 29, Balling Babes 25 – Amy Kelly scored 15 points to lead the ‘Hawks to the win. Kristene Salbu and Beenish Ansari had strong floor games. For the Babes, Natalie Villa tossed in seven points, Katie Kirrane had three assists and Katie Schmidt made four steals.

Maroon Mongeese 37, Fiyatrucks 24 – Katie Kirrane scored eight points to lead the Mongeese. Erin Nemeth, Monica Strezlecki, Keegan Frobey and Rachel Maley had six points each. For the ‘Trucks, Katie Schmidt and Jen Greenwood tossed in 10 points apiece and Kaley Kruger played well.

Junior Boys

Vipers 51, Eagles 34 – Max Nacewicz canned 16 points to lead the Vipers to the win. Jeff Grasso, Nick Grasso and Kyle Packer all played well. For the Eagles, Will Northrup had 11 points and nine rebounds as Mike Zaccaro tossed in nine points. Will Fletcher (6 points, 4 assists) and Eric Samuelson (8 rebounds, 4 steals) had fine floor games.

Wildcats 50, Eagles 29 – Max Brazo popped in 16 points as the Wildcats rolled to the win. Derek Krewson and Eric McCabe tossed in eight points apiece while Cole Baldino chipped in with six. For the Eagles, Mike Zaccaro had 12 points and Dan Sclafani added nine with Zaccaro and John Fellin combining for 12 rebounds. Travis Szalay put forth a strong defensive effort.

Hornets 44, Thrashers 41 – John Wlasuk canned 15 points and Kevin Phillips pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Thrashers. Keenan Bennett (4 assists) and Mike Greenwood (5 steals) played well.

Hawkeyes 42, Hurricanes 34 – Rob Uhde popped in nine points as the Hawkeyes slipped past the Hurricanes. Mason West made five steals and Tyler Covert grabbed six rebounds. For the ‘Canes, Tenney dropped in 12 points and Blanc added six. Marks and Sherwood played well.

Thunder 45, Rockets 37 – Doug Brodbeck poured in 16 points and Sean Ross added 12 to lift the Thunder to the win. Ben Stoller, James Rebman and Ryan LeMay had strong floor games. For the Rockets, Brian Reed dropped in 13 points while Mike Mossbarger (6 assists) and Rob Carroll (8 rebounds) played well.

Gotham Gators 66, Huskies 44 – Cody Fisher keyed an offensive explosion with 22 points and Louis Raab grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Gators to the win. Matt Hoffman dished off six assists and Colin Cooper sparked the defense. For the Huskies, Curtis Droniak scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Mike Lord canned 11 points. Theo Harlett and Kyle Hagerman played well.

Regulators 46, Hawks 42 – Sam Kerr dropped in 17 points and Campbell added 10 more to lead the Regulators. For the Hawks, Austin Jones scored 16 points and Trevor Carey dropped in eight more. Jack McManus had two steals and Patrick Sullivan grabbed six rebounds.

Celtics 34, Knicks 20 – Mara Scallon scored 10 points and Erin Bell grabbed six rebounds as the Celtics defeated the Knicks. Shannon Barra had four steals. For the Knicks, Jessica Haitz and Deanna Tassinari combined for 14 points with Haitz making six steals and Tassinari dishing off five assists. Breanne Lubinsky had six rebounds and Amanda Stanton played well.

Huskies 32, Rebels 24 – Sarah Pettinelli poured in 18 points and Laurel Speed made 10 steals to lead the Huskies to the win. Emma Herring and Colleen Cosgrove had strong floor games. For the Rebels, Kaitlyn Vos Winkel and Erin Brown tossed in six points apiece while Courtney Amaral grabbed 10 rebounds. Ashley Cirone and Meghan Gibbons played well.

Da Bears 31, Hurricanes 12 – Kelly O’Connor scored eight points to help lift Da Bears past the Hurricanes. Emma Fiore (6 assists), Meredith Bridges (4 steals) and Ashley Perry played well. For the ‘Canes, Victoria Picerno dropped in eight points.

6th Grade

Gunners 32, Huskies 26 – Eric Fiore tossed in 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Gunners to the win. Thomas Primavera added six points as Matt Rahtelli and Michael Daubert played well. For the Huskies, Brandon Marks, Devin DiNicola and Stephen Rahr had solid performances.

Grizzlies 39, Regulators 23 – Alex Roche popped in 14 points and Nick Madden grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Grizzlies. Christian Mather and Josh Villa played well. For the Regulators, Nicky Sajovic had 12 points as Harrison Buzzi, Wyatt Depuy and Justin Cherry had nice games.

Blue Devils 39, Knicks 20 – Reid Schmidt dropped in 12 points as Sean Elliott, Matt Spencer and Chris Erikson had strong floor games to lead the Blue Devils. For the Knicks, Pat Thornberg tossed in 12 points while Joe Davis and Mike Senf played well.

Nighthawks 54, Raptors 49 – Michael Scharfenberg poured in 35 points as the Nighthawks slipped past the Raptors. Jim Pearson, Colton Sposta and Brennan Merrick all played well. For the Raptors, Justin DeVellis canned 33 points while Kevin Shpunt, Charlie Helgren and Jack Kearney played well.

Tar Heels 60, Nighthawks 42 – Phil Reynolds canned 16 points to lead the Tar Heels to the win. Jay Destories, Tyler Coleman and Daniel Bethke played well. For the ‘Hawks, Michael Scharfenberg popped in 18 points and Troy Larsen, Dan Poeltl and Robbie Hughes played well.

Huskies 53, Nighthawks 37 – Jimmy Leidlein poured in 15 points as Matt Wood, Matt Janco and Dan Spillane played well to lead the Huskies. For the ‘Hawks, Spencer Brindley popped in 13 points and Brian Arnold had a nice floor game.

Runnin Rebels  39, Celtics 30 – Jack Lago poured in 23 points as the Rebels rallied back from an 11-point deficit for the win. Alex Romeo, Colin Post and Dom Scarangella (8 rebounds) played well. For the Celtics, Nick Cagganello scored 14 points as Mitchell Stewart, Ryan Rosenberger and Patrick Pierce played well.

Knicks 33, Mavericks 22 – Tommy Gleason canned 16 points to lift the Knicks to the win. Jacob Moore dished off four assists and Patrick Afriyie had four steals. For the Mavs, Robert Linden popped in eight points as Jordan Sock and Matt Baldino had solid floor games.

Notre Dame 25, Cavaliers 20 – Matt White and Logan Puleri combined for 13 points to lift Notre Dame to the win. Don Sun and Grant Larnerd played well. For the Cavs, Garrison Buzzanca and Cody LaRussa combined for 14 points as Matt Lindell dished off nine assists and Nick Norberg had seven rebounds.

Mercury 30, Hurricanes 14 – Powell scored 12 points and Melissa Buccino grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Mercury. Tess Murray made six steals and Courtney Escoda had a solid floor game. For the ‘Canes, Engler tossed in 10 points as Heather Lowe, Shannon DiLorio and Nicole Rothenbucker played well.

Knicks 27, Jaguars 12 – Jessica Gibbons canned 15 points and Elyn Gordon had six points and five rebounds to lead the Knicks to the win. Lia Tassinari and Caitlyn Gibney had four steals apiece. For the Jags, Taylor Brady popped in five points and Samantha Chanko, Jennifer Davies and Madeline Fletcher played well.

Liberty 33, Vols 19 – Cassie Ekstrom poured in 16 points and Lindsey Jagoe added six more to lead the Liberty to the win. Olivia Sergiovanni and Rachel Karnoff played well on defense. For the Vols, Shaina Evanko popped in five points as Rachel DiVanno grabbed seven rebounds. Ashley Meisenheimer had a strong performance.

Huskies 30, Gaels 20 – Kristy Papaj popped in 14 points and Shannon O’Gorman grabbed nine rebounds and made four steals to lead the Huskies to the win. Tess Kneisel had six rebounds and four steals while Ridhi Sahani played well. For the Gaels, Lauren Sarna canned six points as Taylor Zigman and Kelly O’Connell played well.

Thunder 16, Warriors 11 – Jacob Hill and Sawyer Conrad led the offense and lifted the Thunder to the win. David Corsi, Nick Rosario and Ryan King played well. For the Warriors, Nick Roche canned six points as Sean McCafferty, Noah Velush-Rogers and Curtis Giles played well.

Heat 37, Wildcats 22 – Colton Smith and David Matthews combined for 26 points as the Heat burned the Wildcats. Robbie McCabe, Joe Santella and Harry Duffy played well. For the ‘Cats, Patrick Burger popped in eight points as David Csordas (3 steals), Harry Depuy (5 rebounds) and Akshay Delity played well.

Raptors 24, Rockets 12 – Julian Dunn scored 14 points and dished off three assists to lead the Raptors. Eric Cascone (3 steals) and CJ Dunn (4 rebounds) had solid floor games. For the Rockets, Michael Cirone popped in five points as Max Rucinski, Logan Walsh and Connor Roche (6 rebounds) played well.

Killer Bees 26, Nighthawks 22 – Kevin Conte canned nine points to lift the Bees to the win. Nate Dowd, Kunal Marwah and Alex Klang (5 rebounds) played well. For the ‘Hawks, Jeremy Doski poured in 12 points as Will Swain, Trevor Palmer and Connor Lemay had solid floor games.

Knicks 39, Huskies 32 – Stephen Grasso scored 10 points while Troy Frangione had eight points and 11 assists to lead the Knicks to the win. Trevor Lopez grabbed six rebounds and made four steals as Robby Schreiber (5 points) and Zach Weiland (4 points) played well. For the Huskies, Bobby Archiere and Nick Cirone tossed in eight points apiece as Bryce Decker and Ryan Szalay played well.

 

Midget Girls

Eagles versus Yellow Peeps – Jessica Shairer, Mallory LoBuglio, Victoria Kroha and Sarah Annesley led the Eagles as Jessica Maturo, Margaret Elkins,Meghan Doyle and Kate Reilly powered the Peeps.

Fighting Irish versus Tigers – Maren Brady, Molly Begg, Clare Boyle and Emily Montoya played well for the Irish as Maya Delity, Rachel Williams, Brittany Antous and Lauren Wilcox led the Tigers.

Huskies versus Blue Swish – Amanda Donovan, Amanda Solomon, Nicki Zaccaro and Maddie Bridges anchored the Huskies while Marina Renzi, Alana Murray, Lindsay Hoyt and Hannah Hripak played well for the Swish.

Panthers versus Purple Penguins – Emily Neave, Sarah Bender, Bridget Walsh and Lucy Helgren powered the Panthers while Jillian Pieretti, Kayla Zuccarello, Meghan Goyda and Julia Wiberg played well for the Penguins.

Midget Boys

Green Goblins versus Nighthawks – Matt Elias, Austin Kasbarian, Jack Procaccini and Scotty Bauer led the Goblins while Justin Hall, Cameron Mitchell, Adam Manes and Matthew Frazzetta powered the ‘Hawks.

Blue Jays versus Blizzard – Devon Luzietti, Spencer Burden, Matthew Kretz and Ethan Carpenter played well for the Jays as David Anderson, Jack Lavalle, Andrew Janco and Kelland Christie anchored the Blizzard.

Sharks versus Orange Crush – Holden Turk, Max Weber, John Pierce and Jackson Cryder had solid floor games for the Sharks while Jamie Cochrane, Jeremy Salaris, Jacob Meenan and Josh Houle played well for the Crush.

Knicks versus Huskies – Liam Palilla, Bobby Haskins, Andre Masser and Matt Meyers played well for the Knicks as the Huskies were led by the efforts of James Accousti, Mike Meyer, Jacob Anastasi and Michael Schlesinger.

Yellow Lightning versus Vipers – Jared Pearson, Jacob Steinbrey, Jack Palermo and Devon Peterson led the Lightning while Andrew Svanda, Brian Kiley, Hunter Booker and Geoff Santore powered the Vipers.

Exterminators versus Flames – Michael O’Keefe, Joe Duero, Michael Liberante and Tyler LaCroce played well for the Exterminators as Nicholas Bourgeois, Joey Conrad, RH Clark and Ben Dieckman anchored the Flames.

Chargers versus Green Pythons – Sean Wallace, Bryan Morrissey, Thomas Leuci and Chad Azzarito led the Chargers as the Pythons got solid performances from Tim Pritchett, Justin Dunn, Zach Laros and Thomas Adessi.

Timberwolves versus Purple Bandits – Gavin Stubbs, Cole Rogalin, Graham Dowd and Colin Patrick led the T-Wolves while Brian Gallagher, Austin Engler, Tony Leonardi and Nick Samuelson led the Bandits.
