Civil War Forum On
Shermanâs March To The Sea
BROOKFIELD â Peter Cronin, a Brookfield resident and Civil War historian, will give a lecture and visual presentation on the events that took place in the closing months of the American Civil War during Union General William Tecumseh Shermanâs march through Georgia to the sea.
The so-called Scorched Earth Campaign began at Atlanta on November 15, 1864, as Sherman pursued the Confederate Army of Georgia across the state, arriving near Savannah on December 20, 1864. On Christmas Eve Sherman sent a telegram to President Lincoln in which he presented the President with the City of Savannah as a Christmas gift.
Mr Croninâs lecture will be the next in an ongoing series of Civil War Forum for Brookfield Historical Society & Museum. The Sherman presentation will be on Monday, April 6, at 7:30 pm. Following the presentation Mr Cronin will field questions on the campaign.
The program will take place at the historical societyâs museum, at the intersection of Routes 25 and 133 in Brookfield Center.
Admission is free and complimentary refreshments will be served. For more information on this and other public programs being offered by the historical society call 740-8140 or visit BrookfieldCTHistory.org.
