Combating Vandalism
To the Editor:
How terrible it was to read about the damage to the 9/11 memorial on the Lasher property on Route 302. The damage probably had absolutely nothing to do with the date of December 07 (70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack) and probably nothing to do with the memorial itself.
Most Newtowners cherish their veterans and symbols. However, I must disagree with the first selectman. Yes it is indicative of some of the youth in Newtown. Remember the $18,000 damage to the St Rose cemetery and 11 instances of personal property damage on Thanksgiving Eve in 2009? I do. Both unsolved. Even this edition of The Bee has vandalism in the police reports. It starts with eggs, damaged mailboxes, progresses to rocks and broken windows.
Newtown PD canât possibly be everywhere with four officers on the midnight to eight shift. The ones that do patrol these hours should do something. Youths are easy to spot in cars. Laws are on the books to be used to effect traffic stops and investigative techniques to stop criminality.
