As the regular season draws to a close, the Newtown High School boysâ tennis team sports a 10-1 record and features two undefeated singles players as well as an undefeated doubles team. It also has a first singles player who has just one loss and a handful of others â like third singles player, Sean OâMahoney â who have proven they can play with anyone.
There are many, including first year coach, Martin Margulies, who feel that the Nighthawks could very well win their first league title since an undefeated season in 1998. Prior to that, Newtown had not won a conference crown since the Woody Freeman days in 1981. Back then the league was known as the Western Connecticut Conference.
Newtownâs only loss this spring came at Weston April 18 when Newtown was forced to play with a skeleton crew due to spring break. The Trojans are a formidable foe â spring break or no spring break â and Newtown will get its chance to prove it is the better team at the South-West Conference tournament May 21-22 at Bethel.
Last week, the Newtown juggernauts made quick work of both New Milford and Pomperaug and were slated to host a strong Brookfield squad on Wednesday of this week. On Monday, Newtown welcomes Joel Barlow, another one of the SWCâs stronger clubs.
